The archives of many a late author, from Margaret Wise Brown (Four Fur Feet) to Sylvia Plath (The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit), often yield unpublished manuscripts. Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, is no exception: he wrote but did not illustrate this rhyme, which assigns colors to moods. The effort is pleasant but lightweight: "You'd be/ surprised/ how many ways/ I change/ on Different/ Colored/ Days," announces a child, portrayed as a flat, gingerbread-man shape of yellow, then blue, then purple. Spread by spread, the character metamorphoses into animals of varying hues, from an energetic red horse to a secretive green fish to a droopy violet brontosaur ("On Purple Days/ I'm sad./ I groan./ I drag my tail./ I walk alone"). Husband and wife Johnson and Fancher (Cat, You Better Come Home) do not mime the author's pen-and-ink creations but work in pasty, expressionistic brushstrokes and blocky typefaces that change with the narrative tone. The characteristically catchy Seussian rhyme could help turn a Gray Day into a "busy, buzzy" (Yellow) one, and the snazzy die-cut jacket gives this volume an immediate lift above the competition. But the pointed message of Oh, the Places You'll Go! and the genius of Seuss's early work go missing. Ages 3-8.

Non-traditional Seuss - on the acceptability of emotions

This book is very different from other Dr. Seuss books. First, the whimsical rhymes and made-up words which characterize Seuss in such classics as One Fish, Two Fish..., and The Lorax are absent here. Instead there is a simple elegance in couplets which brings colors and images together with emotions and moods. Second, the playful cartoon-style illustrations of more light-hearted classics are replaced by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher's more abstract paintings. These paintings cover the whole page with deep colors, drenched in emotion. Between the wonderful images suggested by the couplets and the engaging art (not illustration!) this book brings home a message to kids of all ages about the acceptability of their moods and emotions.
My daughters' reaction to this book has been tremendous. My older daughter (4 y.o.) wants to linger on each page to examine the art while my younger daughter (10 mos.) tries to feel the texture of the paint. I can see their faces reacting to the feelings suggested by each color and rhyme. We don't have many children's books that are 'illustrated' in a manner as poignant as this book (but we have an extensive library which most of the classics). Yet despite the 'message' it is never preachy - just a matter-of-fact statement that we all have emotions and they are all OK. Seuss provides the images as a frame of reference to help kids understand and explain them, which is especially helpful for little ones who haven't yet developed the vocabulary and reasoning to figure it out for themselves.
The best benefit is not necessarily even for kids to understand themselves, but to help kids understand grow-ups' moods - why mommy is tired after a long day at work, or why daddy is frustrated when he burns dinner, etc. I can just tell my daughters that I am in a 'grey' mood for a while, and all becomes crystal clear!

Creating a Colorful Way of Communicating Emotion and Mood!

Early in his career, Dr. Seuss wrote many books as Theo. LeSieg (the last name being his own name of Geisel in reverse) that were illustrated by others. In 1973, he wrote the rhymes for this book, but wanted someone else to illustrate it. After his death, his wife brought the book to his publisher's attention. Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher have created a book filled with stunning paintings and fascinating typography to bring Dr. Seuss's range of daily moods and emotions alive. Using this story, people can communicate these feelings more vividly and accurately to one another.
The book is obviously inspired by the common sentence you've heard many times, "I'm feeling blue today."
"Some days are yellow.
Some are blue.
On different days
I'm different too."
"You'd be
surprised
how many ways
I change on Different
Colored
Days."
Most colors are also associated with an animal. Red is a horse kicking up its heels. Brown is a bear, "slow and low." On a yellow day, "I am a busy, buzzy bee." On a green day, he's a "cool and quiet fish." On a happy pink day, he's a flamingo! On black days, he becomes a howling wolf. He even has mixed-up days, when he is several colors at once (disguised as a cut-out cookie of a person).
He's reassuring, as always, in the end.
"But it all turns out all right,
you see.
And I go back to being me."
The paintings in the book are remarkable for the simple, fundamental images they represent . . . both building on and adding to our mental archetypes. They also use color and shape well to create a mood over two colorful pages. Further, the texture of painting is almost palpable to the touch, adding an appreciation for depth and context for the viewer or reader.
One way you can use this book is to ask your child what color he or she is today. You can also communicate your color, as well. You can each learn more about how to change one another's not-so-attractive colors in this way, or to help sustain desirable ones. I know of no other book that is so effective at creating concepts and vocabulary for conveying emotions and moods.
I suggest that you extend this book by adding other colors and images that capture moods and emotions that are not represented here. And don't feel like you have to limit this to your child. Adults can benefit from this perspective and way of communicating as well.
Live vividly and colorfully in ways that please you!

This should be in everyone's library!

My in-laws got me this book shortly after I married my husband. They knew that I collect children's books and thought that I would like to have this one for my collection. They were right! I love it and it quickly grew to one of my all time favorites. The pictures are so wonderful and bright. I love the meaning behind the text that all days are different and some days are good and some days are lousy. On those lousy days, it is a great pick-me-up even for adults. Children love this book and will read it over and over again. Please get this book for anyone you know.
Note to teachers: This is a fantastic book to discuss emotions and feelings. I teach kindergarten and we do a lot of discussion about emotions and feelings and how to handle them. This book is a great way to begin that type of discussion. Also, it is great when working with color words because a different color day is on each page. I usually incorporate both into the same week.

Entertaining, educational and well written - no illustrations

I had a series of these books as a kid that were so well illustrated - that's what I was hoping this was - I was disappointed - no illustrations - but otherwise my 11 year old daughter and I enjoyed finding out about some famous people in history - you can easily get through a book in a night with an older child - or spread it out over a week and it makes Ameilia Earhart a human that you can really imagine.

Simple and easy to understand!!

This book describes the microprocessor in a language which is so very simple and easy to understand.We have this book as a text book for the course in Microprocessors at the New York Institute of Technology. This was my primary reason to buy the book but once i began reading through it I found out that the language and the examples the author has used to describe the architecture and the working of the 188EB, is very uncomplicated and simple and reading the book is so much fun. For graduate students like me this book will definetely prove to be useful in understanding the subject of embedded microprocessors.

Great Book!

The author is actually one of my professors at The State University of New York at StonyBrook Basically Every chapter has to be read at least three times to get a good understanding. This doesn't mean that this is a bad book, it just means that reading about embedded systems for the first time might confuse you. This is an excellent book! It is taught by an excellent professor! I would recommend taking a course in wihich you could design and build your own embedded systems in addition to this book. This book will give anyone who grasps it, a good foundation in embedded systems design.

Great Embedded Book

We use this book in the embedded systems design classes at the University of Wisconsin. I found it easy to read and had great example codes. There are some typos, and it doesn't cover everything, but it is a great beginner and reference book for the powerful 188EB chip.

What a recipe book!

Every Saturday my nana would bake up a storm, we would go home with biscuit tins full of delicious cakes and biscuits. Sadly we lost her when I was fifteen and I lost the opportunity to learn from her. Thirty odd years later I have found a book that has filled in the blanks for me with regards to baking. I love to bake and now I have found the most fabulous book in Mary Berry's Baking Bible. All of Mary's hints and tips have given me the ability to increase my skills and knowledge with my baking and I can't thank her enough! Baking is about sharing, sharing the food of course but also sharing the recipes and the dos and dont's. If you are learning to bake or even an established home baker this book is for you. The information in this fantastic book will only enhance or build on your baking skills. Thank you Mary Berry!

Wonderful collection of unique recipes, considerable fun to try--from the baking and eating side.

Wonderful recipes, but a bit of a challenge from the US side of the pond. Our ovens don't have the same settings, so it's kind of a challenge to guess at temperature/fan speed conversions. Google helps considerably with measurement translations, and we've found that the extra challenges are still worth the effort.

Breezy overview -- for managers who want to start looking at big data, definitely not for techs.

This slim volume provides an adequate, breezy introduction to big data. On the plus, it's a light book, easy to read, easy to digest. The tone is warm and friendly, and the book is quite a pleasure to read. If you just need an overview, and if you are willing to acknowledge that what you are reading barely scratches the surface of the topic -- and that is a legitimate purpose for a book -- then this is perfect. If you want a first, "get your feet wet" kind of book, this is perfect. I think you'd have a hard time finding an easier, more entertaining introduction to the field.

In chapter one, we soon encounter the line, "These aren't real facts about the dazzling nature of data volumes and types today -- I made them up -- but they're probably not that far off." Then in chapter five we get "My focus here is not on how Hadoop functions in detail, or whether Pig or Hive is the better scripting language (alas, such expertise is beyond my technological pay grade anyway)". That's a decent indicator of where this book falls on the breezy, indicator scale.

If you have a technical background, you will not like this book. It is mostly accurate, most of the time. That is not to say that it is incorrect, so much as incomplete. It defines scripting languages as "Programming languages that work well with big data (e.g., Python, Pig, Hive)". Yes, you can use scripting languages to deal with large data. You can also use compiled languages like C#. Cobol has been doing this kind of work for decades. Scripting languages can be used for things beyond data crunching -- a chat client or a game for example. So, here we get a kind of rounding of the corners -- a simplification for sake of clarity. Later on we get machine learning defined as "Software for rapidly finding the model that best fits a data set". Machine learning is so much larger as a field, and this is so small a subset of the possible applications, that it is hard to give it the same "just rounding the corners" courtesy. The book then implies that Python generates Java code (it can, but it would be far simpler to just write Java code to begin with). Mr Davenport calls software engineers "Hackers" then goes through this whole song and dance, divorcing the terms from the outlaw element while trying to get at the concept of a rapid development cycle approach, rather than simply referencing Agile. By his own admission, he's not technical. It shows.

So, it depends on your needs. If you're a manager and want a breezy introduction, it's great. If you're a tech and want information you can use, look elsewhere.

Big Data requires smart data scientists

Big data, at least today, requires some educated faith. ROI is difficult to define in advance--particularly when it involves new products and services or faster decisions, according to Thomas Davenport in this book. Nonetheless, some businesses are getting significant benefits from employing data scientists to work on Big Data, so it definitely seems to be something worth investigating.

Although the idea of Big Data is not precisely defined, the characteristics of Big Data described by the author include unstructured formats, volume of greater than 100 terrabytes, existing in a constant flow rather than a static pool, analysed by machine learning rather than hypothesis, and intended for data-based products rather than internal decision support. These are trends rather than absolutes, as Big Data includes more conventional types of data as well.

The key to deriving maximum advantage from Big Data seems to involve employing the smartest data scientists to analyse the data. Good data scientists are likely to be rare and expensive, given the ideal traits described by the author:

* Understanding of big data technology architectures and coding
* Improvisation, evidence-based decision making and action orientation
* Strong communication and relationship skills, particularly in dealing with senior management
* High level skills in statistics, visual analytics, machine learning, and analysis of unstructured data
* Good business sense and focus on commercial value

The book assiduously avoids using technical language, and as a result the book avoids answering some of the questions raised in readers' minds. For example, the author refers frequently to Hadoop as a preferred technology platform for Big Data, but never really explains how it differs from SQL databases, apart from the fact that it caters for unstructured data (but how?).

The book describes some large businesses such as banks which are making use of Big Data, and some small businesses which are analysing Big Data and using it to create and sell useful information, but never really answers the questions of how a normal business which does not have internal Big Data can get some, or how they could benefit from it, other than by hiring really smart data scientists and hoping that they can think of a way to use Big Data to reduce costs, speed up business processes, or come up with new products or services.

I found more useful ideas for the use of Big Data in Christopher Surdak's book Data Crush: How the Information Tidal Wave Is Driving New Business Opportunities, but this book does provide some interesting insights, particularly into the human elements of Big Data.

I had high hopes from this book but I felt it was too basic. The general problem with Davenport's books is that they offer little practical guidance but rather some high level advise and some examples, although interesting ones, one how analytics are applied across industries.

If you are a Davenport fan then this book might be for you. If now, get another one. There are many out there.

A haunting portrait of a Spanish queen

I've now read the new version of this novel, which was sold to Random House in a two-book deal. Not only has the author finally gotten recognition for his efforts, but the new scenes and edit have refined and smoothed whatever rough edges this book once had. C.W. Gortner writes with eloquence and style; he turns his masterful pen to Renaissance Spain and conjures a diverse and complex land recently united by the Catholic monarchs, Isabel and Fernando. Spain is unfortunately not explored nearly as much as it should be by historical fiction novelists and Gortner brings it to life through the eyes of Juana la Loca, arguably the most beautiful and certainly most enigmatic of the Catholic monarchs' four daughters. Known to history as the Mad Queen and the older sister of Katherine of Aragon (Henry VIII's first wife) Juana has often been neglected as a figure in her own right. This novel restores her to her proper place - and what a dramatic place it is! Through vivid prose and an intense feeling for emotional characterization, Juana tells us her story - from her arranged and ultimately tormenting marriage to the Hapsburg Emperor's son Philip to their lethal struggle for the throne of Spain, which Juana inherits through tragedy. Incredible characters like Queen Isabel, wily Fernando of Aragon, as well Henry VII of England and Louis of France, make memorable appearances; Isabel in particular is a compelling combination of steel and sacrifice. But it is the courageous, amazingly young, and very human Juana who dominates the story, and the secrets she reveals are startling and unexpected. A sumptuous feast for the senses, this novel exemplifies the best of historical fiction - accurate and yet daring in its approach, respectful of the facts but focused on the human elements; you are captured by Juana's story until the very end, when you find yourself both awestruck and haunted by this queen who truly has been forgotten by most of the world until now.

A mesmerizing introduction to Juana la Loca

The Tudors of England have enjoyed surging popularity in the past year, with a hit Showtime series and Philippa Gregory's acclaimed historical novel The Other Boleyn Girl, which was adapted to the big screen last winter. But few people know about Juana of Spain, also known as Juana la Loca, sister to Henry VIII's first wife Katherine of Aragon. In The Last Queen, C.W. Gortner proves that Juana's story is just as complex and captivating as that of her more famous younger sister.

The novel opens in 1492 when Juana is 13 years old. Her parents, Ferdinand and Isabella, have just conquered Grananda, ending 300 years of Moorish rule. Juana has never known life apart from the crusades and her parents' all-consuming dedication to uniting Spain and expelling the Moors. Ferdinand and Isabella passed their passion and fierce nationalism on to at least one of their four daughters: from childhood, Juana harbored an intense loyalty to her native land.

In 15th century Europe, royal children were betrothed in marriage not for love, but to facilitate political alliances. Juana was no exception. Her parents arranged a marriage between Juana and Philip the Fair, Hapsburg heir and archduke of Flanders.

Initially resistant to the marriage, Juana eventually fell in love with Philip and resigned herself to life in Flanders, outside her beloved Spain. But everything changed when, through a succession of family deaths, Juana became direct heir to the Spanish throne; she suddenly saw an ambitious, calculating, even cruel side of her dashing husband.

Chaos ensued. The life Juana had built in Flanders crumbled as everyone around her scrambled to exploit any and every possible political advantage. Her husband was influenced by deceitful, unscrupulous advisors. Her parents put political objectives before family. Church officials were corrupt, and often the most politically ambitious men around. The Spanish nobles who had long resented the power held by Ferdinand and Isabella were determined to wrest it from Juana as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

Juana was anguished by the mistrust she felt toward her husband and parents. She missed her children, all of whom she was separated from at various points in time. She was driven by an underlying loyalty to Spain that compelled her to accept unthinkable risk in order to claim her rightful place as its queen.

The diverse cast of characters in this novel - both heroes and villains - is well developed, sure to evoke a mixture of compassion, admiration, and ire in the reader. Historical figures come alive, and relationships and alliances between various 15th century European monarchs are illuminated.

Gortner sets his story firmly in its historical context, giving the reader a clear sense of a time when adultery was a given and wives were expected to turn their heads, political ambition was paramount, and strong independent women risked being branded as crazy (in Spanish, loca.)

The plot pacing is perfect. Gortner covers considerable territory, without rushing or overwhelming his reader, providing just the right amount of historical background, and fleshing it out with romance, family drama and political intrigue.

Outside of Spain, she might be a relatively obscure historical figure, but by the end of this novel, Juana la Loca seems incredibly real, a person full of conflicting passions and loyalties with a compelling story to tell.

A Life Beyond Endurance

Reading books like this make you realize how lucky you are not to have been born a princess in 1400's Europe. In this novel about Juana of Castille - the second daughter of Ferdinand, King of Aragon, and Isabella, Queen of Castile - Gortner allows you to witness the delicate balance of power and impotence that marked Juana's life. Married off to Philip the Handsome at a young age, her life was continually marked by the power she could potentially wield and the control men had over her. Although she eventually became heir to the Crown of Spain, her husband and father never allowed her to claim her throne. Her once passionate marriage to Philip transformed into one marred by his thirst for power, and even turned abusive when he began spreading rumors about her "madness" in order to justify keeping her locked up. Indeed, her own father and son used the madness card to imprison her in the tower of Torsedillas for fifty-five years, until her death in 1555. Gortner takes some liberties with the storyline, changing for instance, the method of Phillip's death, but his modifications add depth to the story and in the afterword he fully admits he took liberties with Juana's history. He also gave Juana the benefit of the doubt when it came to questions of her sanity. While many historians believe she suffered from schizophrenia, Gortner gives us a woman whose life pushed her to the brink of human endurance and sanity.
