Great atmosphere, as in a Bronte novel

There is nothing for it: the book grabbed me by the collar and had me ensnared for the first third. I could not put down. Then a strange thing happened. It started to repeat itself: first it was the historical details of the family, then the atmosphere of Oklahoma, through to the repetitious nature of the narrative about the childhoods of the protagonist, Erica Calcott, and her sister, Beth. I believe the book would have been improved by pruning by a third.

There was, for me, a large void in the centre where nothing much happened. The atmosphere of the house and the English countryside pervaded, there was the fear that something untoward might happen to young Eddie as a repetition of the earlier disappearance, but there was no real plot development to sustain my interest. I skim-read through the 2nd third and most of the third, driving forwards to see if my guess of the mystery of Henry's disappearance was correct. I hoped like anything I was wrong, and am pleased to say that the author, Katherine Webb, retained the upper hand as I did not guess what would happen.

That said, the negative natures of certain characters, who shall remain nameless to avoid spoilers, and the consequences of their horrific actions were thought-provoking, and remained with me during the time I spent reading the novel and afterwards. There was the message that one is nurtured or born to repeat those very same behaviours that one loathes the most in one's primary caregivers. That was certainly the case in the case of Caroline who returned to her snobbish, upper-class roots.

I recommend The Legacy for the authentic portrayal of times and places. It was haunting and I did not see the twist coming. It was well worth waiting for. It is a good book that fell a little short of its potential to be a great book.

A family secret that follows down through the years

The prologue in 1905 sets the scene on this totally absorbing journey of how the past can send ripples along time in a family to affect the present. It hooks you in straight away with intrigue, leaving you wanting to find out why this is happening and what bearing it has on the story of four generations of Calcott women.

Erica and sister Beth return to Storton Manor in the winter after the death of their grandmother Meredith. Meredith has set terms for their inheritance of the Manor - they have to live there to inherit. We find out straight away that there are memories that Erica can not recall surrounding the disappearance of their cousin, Henry. We find out that Beth is mentally unwell and had been hospitalised. It is the first time they've stayed at the Manor without their parents and everything is in a state of disrepair and neglect.

We then return to 1902 in New York City, following Caroline (who is great grandmother to Erica and Beth) as she starts her journey of being presented to society as a debutante.

The story is told by alternating chapters. The present time is written in the first person from Beth's perspective where we read about the triggers she experiences that takes her back twenty three years ago to Henry's disappearance. Erica also stumbles on a photograph of Caroline taken before she came to London and married Henry Calcott and leads to her searching through the Calcott family history to try to solve an enigma. Caroline's story is written in the third person and charts her life from New York City to the frontier land of Woodward County and prairie life and finally to England.

I enjoyed this balance of one era being told forwards in time while the other is narrated with flashbacks and reflection of the past.

When Erica finds the photograph of Caroline, in the early 1900's we are reading about Caroline's life before she married Henry Calcott. The intrigue of wanting to know what happens in Caroline's life to lead her from what we know to what Erica knows is a strong pull. Also, the Caroline of the early 1900's is so different from the Caroline that Erica's mother talks about in the present time that you want to keep reading to see what trauma happened to provoke such a change in character.

The intrigue of uncovering the secret family history is linked with the intrigue of Henry's disappearance and the effect it has had on Beth. The Dinsdale family, travellers allowed to camp on part of Storton Manor (both in the past and present) are key characters in the lives of the Calcott women.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tension of each era building in intensity and then being left with a cliff-hanger. I was so absorbed in what was happening I just couldn't put my Kindle down!

The Legacy is a journey of secrets, mystery, intrigue, family and love. It is a story of how one woman's actions follows her down through the years and affects future generations. It held my interest from the first word until the last.

Tough one

The story in it self was interesting, but the pace for me much to slow. I thought i was a tough one to get through, nothing really happens a while in the middle of the book and it didnt help that I found one of the main characters obnoxious, immature and all together annoying in its helplessness.
The story is good though and keeps you guessing, so yeah 3 stars.

Trust the Title!

This book answered a lot of questions for me especially the fact the author truly references the bible and instruction that God wills for us in our everyday financial lives. Within 5 days, I had paid off 2 credit cards, transferred a balance to another card and cut those up, along with applying funds to areas that were a burden. I slept with ease knowing that when i woke up I could handle the next bill and/or collector without panic. I wasn't dodging the phone or the mailbox and within a few weeks of applying the methods and advise I had a plan that a year later I still use and the only debts I have now are our home and standard utility bills. No more car payments, no more credit cards and we have money in the savings account. Since then, most every purchase has been made in cash without even flinching, shrinking or regretting. Life is good and getting better everyday.

Seeing Beyond

Right off the proverbial bat I will say if you are not a believer and do not have an active relationship with the Holy Spirit, do not bother, as much of this book involves that belief .

As for the negatives about the bulk of the book being drawn out case histories? Guilty. However, on the other hand, they are great, true scenarios on how some of us get into trouble/debt in the first place. The description of how our country/culture wound up so debt dependent is interesting as well.

If you have a grasp on such things as "The Kingdom Economy" and what (and how very much) the Bible has to say about debt, cosigning, materialism and giving, and you truly want the truth about how you got into and can get out of debt, why it is so seemingly "normal" these days, and that God will indeed intercede when we do what is consistent with His word, this book and the ministry the author founded that has helped thousands will benefit you.

Otherwise, there are thousands of books on the subject that you will probably buy with a credit card even if you can't really afford it.

Very profitable reading.

I really liked this book. It is a classic book for those who are interested in managing their finances according to Biblical principles, and for those who have landed themselves into debt. Larry Burkett teaches biblical principles of debt-management by telling stories... stories collected over years of counseling thousands of struggling individuals and couples. Some of the previous reviewers have said that these stories are just anecdotal scare-tactics, but the intriguing thing is that I see highly-educated people around me making the same "anecdotal" mistakes with their finances (and reaping the consequences). Americans (in general) have no clue how much house they can afford, etc. and regard debt as a necessary evil... or even as a good thing. This book helps you to see debt in a more balanced light, and is highly recommended to anyone who struggles in this area.

As you can see by some of the other reviews, if you're not a Christian, you'll probably get hung up on some of the biblical principles: such things like keeping your word even when it costs you money, family leadership principles, living within your means, and the husband-wife relationship. So if you're not a Christian, I would suggest taking a serious look at the Bible (by studying what it says) and then compare it to the principles in this book. I think you'll find that the Bible is reliable and timeless in its guidelines for finances just as it is for every other area of life.

American born Napoleon Hill is considered to have influenced more people into success than any other person in history. He has been perhaps the most influential man in the area of personal success technique development, primarily through his classic book Think and Grow Rich which has helped million of the people and has been important in the life of many successful people such as W. Clement Stone and Og Mandino. Napoleon Hill was born into poverty in 1883 in a one-room cabin on the Pound River in Wise County, Virginia. At the age of 10 his mother died, and two years later his father remarried. He became a very rebellious boy, but grew up to be an incredible man. He began his writing career at age 13 as a mountain reporter for small town newspapers and went on to become America's most beloved motivational author. Fighting against all class of great disadvantages and pressures, he dedicated more than 25 years of his life to define the reasons by which so many people fail to achieve true financial success and happiness in their life. During this time he achieved great success as an attorney and journalist. His early career as a reporter helped finance his way through law school. He was given an assignment to write a series of success stories of famous men, and his big break came when he was asked to interview steel-magnate Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie commissioned Hill to interview over 500 millionaires to find a success formula that could be used by the average person. These included Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, Charles M. Schwab, Theodore Roosevelt, William Wrigley Jr, John Wanamaker, WIlliam Jennings Bryan, George Eastman, Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, John D. Rockefeller, F. W. In defense of a particular audio rendition of this work, I'll make a few points about what we commonly refer to as The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill.

Since few reviews list them, the 17 principles of success according to Dr. Hill are as follows:

2) A Definite Chief Aim - Save wasted effort, and focus your heart and mind on a well-conceived, practical purpose.

One reviewer here remarked that you ought to just skip this entire book set and instead get Think and Grow Rich, however a cursory examination of the table of contents for Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich shows that the latter book covers a slightly different set of topics. Thereafter, the entire work is re-copyrighted. Hence we see a collection of competing versions of the same original text, some of better quality than others. Any hard copy will run between 1,000 -1,600 pages, so check the page count to ensure you get what you are bargaining for.

As a personal fan of both the science of self-improvement and audiobooks, I recommend against both the BN Publishing edition and the Audible download edition.

The Audible edition is an earlier rendition of the text which contains only 15 original main principles, whereas Mr. Hill gradually expanded his Law of Success central thesis from 15 to 17 over the course of his later life. Additionally, I advise against any Audible product because I cannot in good faith suggest your purchase of any sort of digital media download which contains Digital Rights Management (DRM). With DRM downloads, you run into headaches with playback, copying or burning and ultimately you don't really own the media you paid for.

The BN Publishing edition gives the impression of being extremely poorly executed and the final product leaves a bit to be desired. The two-cd set is well-printed, but the text is an earlier version, the quality of the MP3's sound terrible, and the back cover points to the wrong homepage for the publisher(!).

Therefore, with neither package do you get the "real deal."

The best-quality audiobook of The Law of Success is the High Roads Media edition, which you can buy either from the Napoleon Hill Foundation or here at Amazon. It is a 4-volume unabridged set with some minor editing, some more current examples, and editorial clarifications.

For myself, I am about halfway through the third volume and the going is great. Already my mind and mentality is beginning to shift towards more success-consciousness. I feel better and my "success instincts" are beginning to sharpen. The content is a bit long-winded and archaic, but very solid and very well-thought out, what with 20 years of active research necessary to produce these insights. I heartily recommend it and it should not be passed over. I wish I had come across this 10 years ago.

OUTSTANDING for REAL WEALTH from the Inside Out that LASTS

This is one of the BEST books (there are two in the set) that I have ever read for what truly creates real and lasting wealth, as well as what prevents people from the same.

The wisdom in this book is timeless, and will definitely show you where you may have been unconsciously blocking abundance in your life, as well as the character beneath to sustain it with a pure conscious.

I could quote this book a thousand times. A few of my favorites are:

"No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in the mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes."

"Don't be afraid of a little opposition. Remember that the 'Kite' of success generally rises AGAINST the wind of Adversity - not with it!"

There is more in this book of lasting value that can truly make a difference in your life than many get-rich-quick books I've come across. As this great book states, "Conceit is a fog which envelops a man's real character beyond his own recognition. It weakens his native abilities and strengthens all his inconsistencies."

This book really shows you the stuff wealth is made of. It comes from a pure heart, an open mind that values wisdom, and a person who values people more than dollars. Do that, and you'll come to find more dollars than you ever have before.

Along with this book, I recommend "Think and Grow Rich" (shown above) and "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell if you're looking for more current examples, though timeless and rewarding.

The equalivent of an MBA in personal development

Like most people I bought Think & Grow Rich along with several other business and positive mind books. A leader in a company that I was associated with suggested The Law of Success. He warned me that it would be a lot of reading. At that time it was two hard back copies, beautifully bound.
I asked him if the books helped him. He told me that this set helped him achieve a level of success that was previously unattainable to him. And he told me that this series was much more complete than Think & Grow Rich---it was like attending class. Transcripts from actual Napolean Hill lectures.
I found that like Rich, these books helped me to go to levels that I could never reach before as well. Think & Grow Rich planted the seeds and got my interest as well as offered powerful strategies. This 2 book set helped make more sense of the principles, tied things together.
The other Hill book that I strongly recommend is Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. I know that even in todays world, some people bicker at the positive mind books...but guess what? They work! Everyone I know who has achieved any level of success attributes that success to books like these.
I know they sure have helped me.

Oracle E-Business Suite 12 Financials Cookbook

Overall the book has been a great read and I have to say although the target audience might be the end-user I feel it would be of great benefit to functional and technical consultants alike. The book has the following points that really do set it apart from other publications:

* Everything is clearly marked, with very well laid out screen shots and hence so easy to follow.
* It's succinct allowing the user to explore the various modules but also providing enough of a road map to steer in the right direction should the user lose track.
* The author focuses on important areas within the Oracle modules thereby helping the reader identify with everyday tasks.

The procurement section of the book was my favourite as it taught me a great deal and more importantly how it integrates with Oracle HR. I enjoyed the final chapter, `The End of Period Processing', as this details a number of exercises that need to be done at period end which once again aren't covered in such an iterative approach in most other publications.

Please note the publication is very basic so would suit as a refresher or as a reference guide. If you're a seasoned vetran of Oracle Applications you shouldnt need this publication or for that matter any other publication. For an introduction to R12 it's great.

I have not read the book cover to cover, but I have looked at a number of different chapters and all I see is navigation paths and screenshots that frankly I can get from the User documentation.

I do not find any insight or guidance. Very disappointing.

Books related to Oracle E-Business Suite are few and they all take the same form; a summary of oracle user guides. This book is no difference. It gives very basic functions of the applications with screenshoots.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in a Nonlethal way of defending oneself. The author covers a pretty wide field of objects for self defense for a book of this size and list where they can obtained. Legal issues being brought against the victims in some cases the list that the author covers takes this into consideration when offering suggestions which is very important.

Pleased with Blackaby

The Blackaby's are very trustworthy in their theology. The Experiencing God book we studied really helped my christian walk. God is real and He does want to communicate with us. When God Speaks," is chapters five and six of Experiencing God. Communicating with God in todays world is essential in living a victorious life. We live in a dark world filled with a lot of bad theology. The Blackaby's are a breath of fresh air.

Preface

This text is indented to be a comprehensive instructional package in the area of civil drafting. The authors have used materials that have been tested in the classroom for several years plus input and ideas from industry, specifically civil engineering companies. Our aim is to provide the student or employee with a well-rounded view of the civil drafting field and the types of drawings and skills associated with that field.

The book is arranged in eleven chapters, each dealing with a specific subject area. We feel that this arrangement lends itself well to a one-term or semester course but contains enough information and problems to fit courses of varying length. Each chapter is followed by a test composed of short essay, fill-ins, true/false, and sketching questions. Problems in the form of drawings, which close each chapter, can be completed in the text, on separate sheets of paper, or using computer-aided drafting (CAD) as instructed. The tests and problems enable the student to directly apply the information presented in each chapter to realistic situations.

The field of civil drafting is one filled with variety and excitement. From surveying to construction, courthouse research to artistic interpretation, the opportunities offer many challenges. The authors have drawn on their experiences of surveying in the jungles of Georgia to building houses in the foothills of the Oregon Cascades; from designing wastewater piping to designing solar homes. And most importantly, we have drawn on our collective experiences in teaching the varied aspects of drafting at the community college level. Additionally, we have included the work of contributing professionals in the applications of CAD throughout the entire text and the coverage of geographic information systems (GIS) as applied to civil drafting technology. Many educators, who have successfully used the first, second and third editions of this text have provided comprehensive reviews. These reviews resulted in expanded coverage in every chapter, plus new and varied drafting problem assignments.

The use of this text in the prescribed manner imparts to the student a broad understanding of the civil drafting and a working knowledge of the basic components of mapping. With this knowledge and skill, a variety of job opportunities are open to the student, and with those opportunities, we sincerely hope, a challenging career. Keep in mind that mapping requires accuracy, neatness, and an eye for creative and uncluttered layout.

The purpose of this book is to provide you with theories, concepts, and skills that form the foundation of work done by civil engineering companies. Most mapping in these companies is generated by specialized CAD software using a variety of data collecting by electronic surveying techniques. Regardless of the software used to construct maps, the drafter must still have the knowledge of why and how certain maps and drawings are created. For example, using raw field data from a survey crew, CAD software can automatically generate a map of contour lines showing the elevations and shape of the land, But then it is often the CAD drafter's job to interpret, adjust, and revise these maps and even describe and explain contour features to clients and contractors.

A CD, included in the back of this book, contains AutoCAD border and title block template drawings, as well as base drawings for many of the drawing problems in the book. In addition, it contains a chapter-by-chapter list of Internet web site links related to that chapter. Word files for al chapter tests and map reading exercises are also included. By studying this book and enrolling in a course in which you can apply the concepts presented here, you are providing yourself with an excellent civil drafting foundation. If you are interested in expanding your knowledge and skills in civil drawing and design, you should enroll in advanced civil courses, or courses that provide training in specialized civil engineering software. A wide variety of civil engineering design, modeling, and drafting software is in use today. Specific programs such as Autodesk's Land Development Desktop and Eagle Point Software's LANDCADD are widely used by engineering firms. You should enroll in specialized courses such as these after you have acquired the fundamental knowledge and skills that are presented in this book. Great introduction to Civil Drafting

Due to some of the unreasonably negative reviews of this product on this site, I was a bit wary of this book. However, I gave it a shot anyway and it turned out to be *exactly* what I wanted. I have a certificate in general AutoCAD drafting, but I wanted to get more specifics about civil drafting since that is the field I am planning to get into. I was extremely pleased to find that it was well-written, virtually free of grammatical/typograhical errors, and full of really great maps, figures, and civil engineering drawings.

The book, a general introduction to the discipline of civil engineering drafting, is formatted as a textbook with problems, exercises, and a test at the end of the chapters. It starts with an introduction to cartography, civil drafting, and CAD, followed by a discussion of different types of scale and their uses. A section on surveying fundamentals covers geodesy (shape and size of earth), angular measurements and traverses, and gps, as well as the general theory of importing raw survey data into a drawing. A section on location and direction discusses azimuth, bearing, and magnetic declination, and how they relate to civil drafting. Legal descriptions, including metes & bounds and township & range are covered, as well a section on contour lines. There are also sections on alignments, profiles, and earthwork, which I found to be particularly helpful because they are topics somewhat unique to civil drafting which I did not know much about. The book concludes with discussions of civil engineering drafting standards and an overview of geographic information systems.

The author states up front that this book is not intended to give detailed instructions and descriptions of how to carry out operations using a specific CAD program (I am actually using another book for that purpose: Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 by James Wedding PE, and Scott McEachron along with a student version of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 that I purchased at my university). The original hand-drawing techniques of some of the concepts are discussed (in addition to CAD practices), which is interesting because it puts them into historical context.

I am glad to have the background I got from reading Civil Drafting Technology and I expect it will be a great reference for me in the future.

I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me understand civil drafting. There is no answer section to check my work. So,,,I do not know if I am on the right track with my understanding.

Does anyone know if there is a solutions manual?
