Spencerian Copybooks 1-5, Set, without Theory Book (Spencerian Penmanship), by P. R. Spencer

In the mid-1800's, the Spencerian form of penmanship became a standard. An elegant handwriting was much prized. Today, in our computer age, a fine, beautiful, and legible handwriting brings a warm personal touch to our correspondence. These books, 5 copybooks (available separately or as a set), may be used to introduce cursive writing to second or third graders or to improve the handwriting of older students or adults.

A simple way to learn the script
By Maria
I am really enjoying learning the script through these copybooks even though it is so simple. It takes me back to my school days when we practiced cursive, which I thoroughly looked forward at the time.

I wanted to address something that a number of people had commented on regarding the quality of the paper. I am using a fine mechanical pencil for practicing the strokes in the copybooks. The purpose of the practices in these books is to create the hand/ brain connection: for you to get the feel of making the movements.

It is not necessary to use pen and ink, and in fact, I think that it is distracting as you would be trying to master two things at once. For that reason my suggestion is to use a mechanical pencil that is fine ( it will stay "sharp" like a nib pen ) and focus on getting the form down. If you feel excited to try pen and ink, you can certainly do that with the appropriate paper as a separate exercise.

My second suggestion is to skip the first row on each page of the copybook. Start on the second row and continue to the end moving along in a fluid relaxed manor. (Preferably in one sitting). Then when you get to the end of the page, go back and complete your practice on the first row. It is fun to see how far you have come by comparing the second row (your first practice row) and your first row (your last practice row), and also see how close you are the the sample row above.

It is reassuring to see how, when I worked in a relaxed way, there was a lot of improvement from first to last. My hand did begin to get the "feel" of the movements!

Enjoy!

An excellent manual for writing and the correct way of holding pens
By Aafke-Art
This is an excellent course in elegant nineteenth century longhand. I also brought the theory book. I am an artist by profession and I wanted to learn the beautiful script of the nineteenth century, but I immediately noticed that the different way you are taught to hold the pen made it, while more difficult, far more easy to control and manipulate your pen.
I decided to completely change the way I hold my writing/drawing pens and to adopt this manner for all my work. This is hard and causes my hand to cramp up now and then but it is worth the effort. Maybe the Spencerian manner of holding a pen is of even greater importance than the writing!

The covers contain extra instructions, also that you are meant to use these books with pencil. The paper will bleed through with fountain pens.

I think that one needs a lot more practice anyway than just the booklets give you space and I find some letters more difficult than others so devote more pages to them. So I have brought the Clairefontaine french ruled exercise books. Look for the wire bound larger books, I found sellers with really good deals on the net. Clairefontaine paper is made for fountain pens and is a joy to use. It makes your writing easier too, to have proper paper. The French ruling is the perfect help.

I am really enjoying the books, I am half way now, and my ''normal'' handwriting has improved noticeably.

Another thing I really liked, and I don't know if it was in the theory book or in the instruction books, but in the end, after you mastered the lines and letters, you are free to develop further into our own style.

To make the beautiful thick/thin lines you will need a flexible fountain pen, or a dip pen with flexible nib. A ''calligraphy'' nib will not give you the right effect and will not teach you the difference in pressure needed. That means a vintage pen or a very expensive modern gold flexible nib fountain pen, or, the only affordable modern flexible nib fountain pen: the ''Noodler's Ahab''. (this is a pen for people who like to fiddle with their pens). I love it, use it for sketching too as the difference in pressure and line is an important part of my style. I prefer the Ahab now for sketching as a flexible dip pen (besides the need for an inkwell and constant dipping), tends to snag very easily unless you have very smooth paper, which means you'd have to make your own sketchbooks. And the same goes for writing obviously.

If you want to learn beautiful elegant longhand and learn a superior way of holding pens, I wholeheartedly recommend these books.
I hope this review was helpful to you.

Keep at it!
By AL
I bought this handwriting set after a handwritten letter to my grandmother looked so awful that I was almost ashamed to put it in the mail. Completing the set takes time and patience, but if you stick with it, the results are absolutely worth it. Rather than having to learn both a new pen and a new handwriting style at the same time, I completed these books using cheap ballpoints, but now that I have the muscle memory to shape each letter, transitioning to nicer fountain pens is much easier.

The set starts by having you practice individual lowercase letters, the capitals, short groups of letters, and finally whole phrases. Although at first you have to go quite slowly to form each letter correctly, by the time you get into Book 5, your writing speed is pretty close to "normal." I actually found it quite therapeutic practicing each movement in repetition.

And OH the difference! I get compliments on my handwriting ALL the time now, both from people who know me and from complete strangers. I also find that I get a lot of enjoyment out of practicing it as well. I have the best written grocery lists and to do lists on the planet, because writing is nerdily-fun now. I get requests from people to address envelopes for them because "your handwriting is just so pretty." This set is totally worth the investment, both in time and money. If you stick with it, your handwriting WILL become something to be proud of.

The Seven Storey Mountain, by Thomas Merton

A modern-day Confessions of Saint Augustine, The Seven Storey Mountain is one of the most influential religious works of the twentieth century. This edition contains an introduction by Merton's editor, Robert Giroux, and a note to the reader by biographer William H. Shannon. It tells of the growing restlessness of a brilliant and passionate young man whose search for peace and faith leads him, at the age of twenty-six, to take vows in one of the most demanding Catholic orders--the Trappist monks. At the Abbey of Gethsemani, "the four walls of my new freedom," Thomas Merton struggles to withdraw from the world, but only after he has fully immersed himself in it. The Seven Storey Mountain has been a favorite of readers ranging from Graham Greene to Claire Booth Luce, Eldridge Cleaver, and Frank McCourt. Since its original publication this timeless spiritual tome has been published in over twenty languages and has touched millions of lives.

Amazon.com Review
In 1941, a brilliant, good-looking young man decided to give up a promising literary career in New York to enter a monastery in Kentucky, from where he proceeded to become one of the most influential writers of this century. Talk about losing your life in order to find it. Thomas Merton's first book, The Seven Storey Mountain, describes his early doubts, his conversion to a Catholic faith of extreme certainty, and his decision to take life vows as a Trappist. Although his conversionary piety sometimes falls into sticky-sweet abstractions, Merton's autobiographical reflections are mostly wise, humble, and concrete. The best reason to read The Seven Storey Mountain, however, may be the one Merton provided in his introduction to its Japanese translation: "I seek to speak to you, in some way, as your own self. Who can tell what this may mean? I myself do not know, but if you listen, things will be said that are perhaps not written in this book. And this will be due not to me but to the One who lives and speaks in both." --Michael Joseph Gross

From Library Journal
Harcourt is pulling out all the stops for this 50th-anniversary edition of Merton's spiritual masterpiece. In addition to the full text, this enhanced version includes an introduction by Merton's editor, Robert Giroux, and a reader's note by biographer and Thomas Merton Society founder Fr. William Shannon. The book comes with a cloth binding and a ribbon marker. Merton's faithful fans will be in seventh heaven over this glorious edition.

The Monk Judging the Man
By Lord Galderon
At the beginning of A Seven Storey Mountain, there is "A Note to the Reader," written by William H. Shannon, Founding President of the International Thomas Merton Society. There is a quote from this note which I believe sums up the book:

"The Seven Storey Mountain, I believe it can be said, is the story of a young man named Thomas Merton being judged by a monk named Father Louis."

Father Louis of course, is the name Merton was given when he was accepted into the monastery.

While reading the book, I always felt as if Thomas Merton the monk was suppressing the life events of Thomas Merton the man. You have to understand that this book was written by a monk and censured by monks. There are many details that were omitted, namely Merton's fathering of an illegitimate child and details of his college years. While I understand why these things were omitted, it can be confusing to the reader why Merton was so wracked with guilt and tortured by his existence. The material in the book suggests he was an above average intellect who drank, partied and engaged in the social norms of any college student. I couldn't help but feeling that Merton was walking on eggshells while writing this story. That his life was very much like that of Kerouac and the beats; wild, drunken, exciting and full of debauchery, but here in the Seven Storey Mountain, all of that was censored and molded into a very tame and at times a very dull account.

I would love to read an uncensored version of The Seven Storey Mountain, although I know that will never happen. The gritty details of Merton's life are important because I feel it would better show the incredible contrast and transformation from the sinner to the saint. As is, it comes across as a very pedestrian tale of an average man who becomes an incredible spiritual thinker and writer. This in itself is still incredible, but not as impactful as a story.

The parts I loved the most were Merton's deep insight into the spiritual connection with God, and I feel there wasn't enough of that. I love his book Thoughts in Solitude, and there are moments in this book that remind me of that, but not enough. It is mostly a linear account of his life, which as I've stated before, is heavily censored and watered down. Honestly, it is a very hard book to get through because it can be very dull.

I would recommend you read all or most of Merton's spiritual works and if you want to know more about him, read this last.

A Spiritual Conversion
By Herta Feely
I was captivated by the story of Thomas Merton's life and his conversion to Catholicism. I'd heard of this book for quite some time, but never really knew what it was about other than someone's spiritual journey, and that's what this is. How a man with an unusual childhood (his mother died when he was young, and his artist father took him to France to live for quite some time, then he attended university in England, eventually returning to the US, where he studied at Columbia, aspiring to be a writer) suddenly in his early 20s develops a hunger for the spiritual life. And though he chose to become a Catholic monk, a path filled with obstacles, if he'd been born in another country, I could just as easily imagine him having become a Buddhist monk. This for me was at the heart of his story. He had a spiritual conversion, not just a Catholic or Christian one. His description of and longing for communion with God brought me closer to the same. His words transported and inspired me. He was an unusual man, destined to write about his experience when in fact, at least initially, all he wanted was the silence required by his order of Trappists. He went on to write many other books, some of which I have yet to read. Definitely recommend it, both for those who enjoy a good autobiography and those interested in the spiritual life.

The bent of my mind was essentially "Augustinian."
By Peter Dubbelman
Thomas Merton writes well and he's my brother in Christ; further, his writings inform and stir my passion to come alongside other people's spiritual journey in hopes of seeing them further immersed into the life of God (cf. Acts 8:26-40); however, this book isn't for everyone, and, if you're within Protestant Christianity there will be isolated mentions of Catholicism that you'll need to wrestle through; after all, there are real differences in how Protestants and Catholics articulate the gospel and how their churches construct that understanding.

Merton confesses, "The bent of my mind was essentially `Augustinian.'" (241) Therefore, we shouldn't be surprised that his autobiography is a modern day version of Augustine's Confessions, albeit with a Roman Catholic, pre-Vatican II, monastic flavoring. The book covers his life from childhood to priesthood, highlighting his struggles with surrendering both to Christ and becoming a Trappist Monk.

My take away quotes:
1. The persons most influential in his conversion: Merton and his father occasionally rented a room from the Privats: "They were to be among the most remarkable people I ever knew ... Full of that peacefulness ... which ... came from living close to God ... Sanctified by leading ordinary lives in a completely supernatural manner, sanctified by obscurity, by usual skills, by common tasks, by routine, but skills, tasks, routine which received a supernatural form from grace within, and from the habitual union of their souls with God in deep faith and charity ... I am indebted to them for much more than the kindness and care they showed me, the goodness and the delicate solicitude with which they treated me as their own child ... I had never met people to whom belief was a matter of such moment ... They were concerned, and so deeply and vitally concerned, at my lack of faith ... I owe many graces to their prayers, and perhaps ultimately the grace of my conversion and even my religious vocation." (61-65)

2. The method of his conversion: "But for me, with my blind appetites, it was impossible that I should not rush in and take a huge bite of this rotten fruit. The bitter taste is still with me after not a few years." "[I had] walked out into the world that I thought I was going to ransack and rob of all its pleasures and satisfactions. I had done what I intended, and now I found that it was I who was emptied and robbed and gutted. What a strange thing! In filling myself, I had emptied myself. In grasping things, I had lost everything. In devouring pleasures and joys, I had found distress and anguish and fear ... When I was reduced to this extremity of misery and humiliation, I fell into a love affair in which I was at last treated in the way I had treated not a few people in these last years ... And it was my defeat that was to be the occasion of my rescue." "My ploughed soul was better ground for the reception of good seed." (131, 181-82, 230)

3. Merton's struggle about his vocation, which went on for the entire book: "Did I not know that I really had no vocation [i.e. a call to the priesthood] ... it was the same old story again." Further down the page: "Perhaps what I wanted was to maintain myself in an equivocal, indefinite position in which I would be free to dream about entering the monastery, without having the actual responsibility of doing so, and of embracing the real hardship of a certain Cistercian life. If I asked advice and was told I had no vocation, then the dream would be over: and if I was told I had a vocation, that I would have to walk right in to the reality ... And so I walked ... full of indecision, praying for light."

4. His comments against the argument that a good God cannot exist given the plague of evil (142) and about "Why should anyone be shattered by the thought of hell?" (238) are worth being read.

5. "The beginning of love is truth, and before He will give us His love, God must cleanse our souls of the lies that are in them. And the most effective way of detaching us from ourselves is to make us detest ourselves as we have made ourselves by sin." (409)

6. "One of the most important aspects of any religious vocation ... is the willingness to accept life in a community in which everybody is more or less imperfect." (419)

7. "All my bad habits, disinfected, it is true, of formal sin, had sneaked into the monastery with me and had received the religious vesture along with me: spiritual gluttony, spiritual sensuality, spiritual pride..." (426)

97 Orchard Street, New York: Stories of Immigrant Life, by Linda Granfield

Imagine growing up on Orchard Street in 1916. If you were a member of the large Confino family you’d be living in 325 square feet of space. The only fresh air and natural light would come from the two windows in the front room. No heat, no water, no bathtub, no shower. Toilet in the hall.

The Confinos’ apartment is only one part of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, an extraordinary facility in New York City. The Museum has restored 97 Orchard Street to provide us with an opportunity to understand the immigrant experience shared by millions who have come to North America.

In text and with archival photos, Linda Granfield tells the story of four families, including the Confinos, who called 97 Orchard Street home, and provides information about the period, the history of the house, and the neighborhood, bringing to life conditions that were familiar to immigrants in many of North America’s big cities. The stories and archival materials are beautifully complemented by Arlene Alda’s sensitive photographs that evoke the hardship, the dignity, and the hope encompassed in 97 Orchard Street.

The book includes useful facts, information about the Museum and its efforts to help new immigrants who share similar experiences. Whether or not the reader can visit the Museum itself, this book is a valuable resource in understanding our own histories in North America.

From Publishers Weekly
Guided by the stories of four families known to live in the titular tenement, author Linda Granfield provides an illuminating look at life at the turn of the century and beyond in 97 Orchard Street, New York: Stories of Immigrant Life. Arlene Alda's sensitive b&w photographs of the building, which has been preserved as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, share space with historical images and artifacts from the museum's collection, as well as photographs of the neighborhood today.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-The Lower East Side Tenement Museum opened in New York City in 1994. "Urban archeology," "diligent research," and "interviews with former residents" facilitated the re-creation of this building that housed immigrants from the mid-1800s to its closing in 1935. Essentially a photo-essay of material from the museum, the text is divided into 13 brief sections beginning with "Mystery: The Gumpertz Family." Readers learn that "Julius Gumpertz walked out of the building-on a crisp October morning in 1874" never to be heard from again. Working as a seamstress, his wife managed to support her four young children, one of whom "died of diarrhea, an all-too-common fate for nineteenth-century infants." Each black-and-white photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption. Other sections introduce three more families and also tell their stories through artifacts and oral histories. Additional segments such as "Early Immigration" and "Ellis Island: Portal of Hope" deal with more general aspects of immigration at that time. Chock-full of the simple details of everyday life as well as larger tales of human joy and suffering, this volume presents an intriguing window into urban tenements just before and after the turn of the century. Be aware that there is no table of contents, no index, and the information presented does not follow a simple time line. However, the book is a useful addition to general collections, especially as a starting point for further investigation.

great pictures, personal stories
By Bananimal
This is a great glimpse at early immigrant life in New York City. The pictures were amazing and the stories that went with them really gives the reader an idea of what it was like to live as a new arrival to America. I would have enjoyed it more if it were longer but the stories and pictures provided were great.

The Fire Next Time, by James Baldwin

A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two "letters," written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. Described by The New York Times Book Review as "sermon, ultimatum, confession, deposition, testament, and chronicle...all presented in searing, brilliant prose," The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of our literature.

Amazon.com Review
It's shocking how little has changed between the races in this country since 1963, when James Baldwin published this coolly impassioned plea to "end the racial nightmare." The Fire Next Time--even the title is beautiful, resonant, and incendiary. "Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?" Baldwin demands, flicking aside the central race issue of his day and calling instead for full and shared acceptance of the fact that America is and always has been a multiracial society. Without this acceptance, he argues, the nation dooms itself to "sterility and decay" and to eventual destruction at the hands of the oppressed: "The Negroes of this country may never be able to rise to power, but they are very well placed indeed to precipitate chaos and ring down the curtain on the American dream."

Baldwin's seething insights and directives, so disturbing to the white liberals and black moderates of his day, have become the starting point for discussions of American race relations: that debasement and oppression of one people by another is "a recipe for murder"; that "color is not a human or a personal reality; it is a political reality"; that whites can only truly liberate themselves when they liberate blacks, indeed when they "become black" symbolically and spiritually; that blacks and whites "deeply need each other here" in order for America to realize its identity as a nation.

Yet despite its edgy tone and the strong undercurrent of violence, The Fire Next Time is ultimately a hopeful and healing essay. Baldwin ranges far in these hundred pages--from a memoir of his abortive teenage religious awakening in Harlem (an interesting commentary on his first novel Go Tell It on the Mountain) to a disturbing encounter with Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. But what binds it all together is the eloquence, intimacy, and controlled urgency of the voice. Baldwin clearly paid in sweat and shame for every word in this text. What's incredible is that he managed to keep his cool. --David Laskin

From Publishers Weekly
Speakers or headsets will have to be turned up to listen to Jesse L. Martin's low, slow reading of Baldwin's classic long essay on racism and African-American identity. Martin seeks to be respectful of Baldwin, but he ends up rendering the meaning and the force of his work relatively inert. Pausing in poorly selected places, placing emphasis where little should be placed, Martin does not convey the precision and anger of Baldwin's prose. Instead, Baldwin's book becomes Great Literature, to be intoned and honored, but not truly grasped. Readers with an interest in Baldwin's work will be far better served by reading his prose to themselves than having Martin read it to them. A Vintage paperback.(Apr.)

Review
"Basically the finest essay I’ve ever read. . . . Baldwin refused to hold anyone’s hand. He was both direct and beautiful all at once. He did not seem to write to convince you. He wrote beyond you." --Ta-Nehisi Coates

"So eloquent in its passion and so scorching in its candor that it is bound to unsettle any reader." --The Atlantic

I thought of myself as an articulate, deep thinker, and worldly..
By Gabriel Doe
I thought of myself as an articulate, deep thinking, and worldly individual, however, after reading how eloquently Mr. James Baldwin captured so perfectly the global (especially American) misconception and political Hippocrates we all face even today, regardless of "colour/color" I know, with great humility, what it feels like to walk amongst literary giants and to acknowledge what a fool I am!

Brilliant
By Elizabeth A. Gibson
This is one of my two favorite books by Baldwin (the other is Giovanni's Room, and I am neither black, nor male, nor gay). The writing is clear, direct and powerful. Baldwin states home truths on race directly, baldly, and wisely. I think this book should be required college reading in the US, at every college and university, and for people of every race.

In addition to his frank, clear, and insightful messages and insights about race relations in America, Baldwin is a first-class rhetorician, a natural, and his diction is pitch-perfect.

I first read this book in college, when I was around 20; I am now 49 and have reread it many times. It remains a favorite. Highly recommended.

A book that is relevant today
By Glynne Gervais
Since I have lived through the time when Baldwin wrote this book up to this day , I must say he accurately described the past as well as what has come to be. We as a nation have not solved the problem but we do see the distraction of our moral fabric. In the sixties,we thought the race riots were the fire. Now we see the other end of the rainbow as destruction in our spirit. We black people have learned a lot about ourselves and about how power destroys. Our struggle is to keep our inner spirit.
