Paul Rand (1914-1996) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design whose career spanned almost seven decades. Always enquiring and investigating, he explored the formal vocabulary of European avant-garde art movements and synthesised them to produce a distinctive graphic language. Rand was a major force in editorial design, advertising and corporate identity. He was art director at "Esquire" and "Apparel Arts" magazines, and he designed the ground-breaking covers for the cultural journal "Direction". He worked at the Weintraub Advertising Agency from 1941-1954 and, in 1955, established his own design studio, acting as consultant to companies such as IBM, Westinghouse and UPS. His logos for these companies are world-renowned design classics. This book comprises a definitive collection of Rand's works, through an exploration of his advertising, publishing and corporate identity work. A pioneer in the field of visual communication, Rand developed a fresh and individual design language drawn from European art movements including Russian constructivism, de Stijl, and the Bauhaus. His career as an art director, teacher, writer, and design consultant to major corporations spanned almost seven decades. Rand arguably got his start at the tender of 3 when he first began to secretly copy pictures of the attractive Palmolive models pictured in advertising displays in his father's grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. He later modeled his aesthetic on avant-garde artists like Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, and architect Le Corbusier, each of whom advocated a timeless spirit in design. Rand began his career in an era when working by hand was a given, a reality that would change before his eyes as the mass media, entertainment, and consumer industries were revolutionized by increasingly technical equipment, and ultimately the computer.

About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the NY Times Book Review and co-chair of the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is the editor of the AIGA online journal, VOICE. He is a contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, Baseline, and ID. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines. He is author, co-author, and editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture.

George Lois, a native New Yorker, joined Doyle Dane Bernbach as an art director in 1958 and started his first agency in 1960. He is the recipient of an AIGA Gold Medal, among other honours, and the author of two books on advertising. He continues to consult for major corporations.

Jessica Helfand is a partner at Winterhouse, a design collaborative in New England, and a founding editor of "Design Observer," She teaches in the graduate program in graphic design at Yale University and has written several books on design and cultural criticism. She lives in Falls Village, CT.

The Late Great Paul Rand

If you know anything about design, the words Paul Rand retain some meaning for you. It may be vague, perhaps one of your professors recommended you look him up, maybe one of your design icons listed him as an influence.

Or quite likely you have seen some of his work, and never knew the man behind such world famous, global dominating logos. This has to be the most in depth Paul Rand book I have read, and I have borrowed many from various libraries. Which inclines me to say that if the history of design has ever intrigued you or you just like Mr.Rands work, then this is probably the best choice for you. Not only does it have a ton of images but it's probably the best bang for you buck as far as Rand books go.

Buy a Magnifying Glass

This is a pretty thorough book on a graphic design icon. Unfortunately, the book is typeset very poorly in an 8pt serif font. Reading more than a few pages at a time strains your eyes and results in a headache - ironic considering Rand was a firm believer in usable design.

Lots of full color samples of Rand's work to coincide with the text, which is nice.

Overall, this book is a great resource. It's too bad the type is so difficult to read.

One Of The Best Biographies Ever!!! WOW!

This is one of the best biographies I have ever read about anyone. This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!

The Beauty of Truth

What appeals to me as a reader -- and what I admire about Diane as a writer and biographer -- is that Faron is revealed as a "man in full." Faron possessed a magical voice, a gift for entertaining, an appreciation for his artistic abilities, but he apparently was also possessed by the demons of depression.

Years of research, and a compassionate understanding of the man behind the music, gives readers (and history) a book wherein Diane examines Faron's life and death, never hiding sad truths that sometimes leave a reader reeling, but yet we know she loved and respected the man and his art.

A Man of Contradictions

Faron Young, who is today one of the more underestimated country singers of his generation despite his long career and many hit records, was a hard man for even his friends to peg. That is because, as so aptly described by Diane Diekman in her Faron Young biography, "Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story," he was a man of strong contradictions.

Faron Young was one of the nicest men in the world but he was one very mean drunk and no one wanted to be around him when he was drinking heavily (and that was much of the time). He was extremely generous to those who had less then him (often they were songwriters on the way up, such as Willie Nelson) and were in need of a few hundred dollars to tide them over, but was known to refuse his road band the extra five dollars a day that would have made all the difference in the world to them. He loved his children and considered himself to be a good family man but he made it a point to speak of his youngest daughter as his "only little girl" and never publicly acknowledged the other daughter he had out of wedlock or how terrible his relationship with his oldest sons really was. Faron could curse like a sailor, and he usually did, but would behave respectably around the wives of his band members. He had lots of longtime friends and he had lots of longtime enemies. He was an astute businessman who made some terrible business decisions that cost him a whole lot of money.

All of these contradictions, taken as a whole, are probably why so many people explained their toleration for Young's behavior by saying, "That's just Faron." Connie Smith used those words to explain how someone with her temperament could endure working on the road with the fast-living Faron Young. And even Jean Shepard, as brash as she sometimes appears to be, finally refused to go on the road with him any longer.

Longtime Faron Young fans who witnessed him in his prime will probably still find some surprises in, or have their memories nudged by, Diane Diekman's well-researched and detailed biography. She reminds us that Faron was founder of the influential Music City News and reveals just how much personal money he put into the newspaper in order to keep it afloat long enough for it to pay its own way. Her readers also learn that he would have had more hit records, and number ones, if he had not refused to let his label use payola to move his records up the charts the way record labels bought higher chart positions for so many other singers.

And that is just the beginning of what is packed into "Live Fast, Love Hard." The book covers the childhood that may explain Faron's own cold approach to fatherhood, the national, though bogus, scandals that damaged his career, his failed marriage, and his tragic death at his own hand. About the only thing missing is a comprehensive discography of Faron's recordings, although the book does mention most, if not all, of his record albums and notes which ones include his biggest hits.

So this is a book both for those who are already fans of Faron Young's great voice and for those to whom he is hardly more than a name from country music's past. Put a copy of "Wine Me Up" on the turntable, grab a cold one, prop your boots up on the foot stool, and enjoy this book. If you're not already a Faron Young fan, you probably will be by the time you finish "Live Fast, Love Hard."

About the Author
Ma Thanegi was born in Myanmar and educated at the Methodist English High School, the State School of Fine Arts and the Institute of Economics. She is a painter who has exhibited with group shows since 1967 and has had several exhibitions of her own. She is a contributing editor at The Myanmar Times, an English language weekly, and editor of Enchanting Myanmar, a travel magazine. She is the author of The Illusion of Life: Burmese Marionettes, The Native Tourist: In Search of Turtles, Paw Oo Thet: His Life and Creativity, An Introduction to Myanmar Cuisine nad Inle: Blue Sea in the Shan Hills. She lives in Yangon, Myanmar.

About the photographer
Barry Broman is a retired American diplomat who received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Southeast Asian studies from the University of Washington. He worked as a photographer for the Associated Press in Southeast Asian and served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. He is the photographer of Irrawaddy: Benevolent River of Burma and Spiritual Abodes of Thailand and also produces documentary films on Asian subjects.

Another amazing read!

The more I read of Ella Phoenix's stuff, the more I like it. She has this really interesting way of mixing the expected with the unexpected, so that her stories will end up surprising you. Dealing with topics such as humiliation and bimbofication in a way where it doesn't seem horrible and degrading (in a bad way!) is hard, and in my experience, most erotica writers don't manage to do it.

Ms Phoenix does. Not only are her stories scorchingly hot and well written, but she also puts little touches in so that you never know just what to expect. This book is no different.

OUTDATED MOSTLY USELESS MATERIAL

Chess on the internet has changed so much and so fast since this book has been published in 2002 it has made this book useless. I have sold many chess books and received this book in a lot of books I purchased about 10 years ago. The book was not very helpful to me. You don't need this book to figure out How & Where to play chess. You certainly don't need this to search for any specific chess issue, games, history, analysis etc. When I went to re-sell this book on the net I felt embarrassed to ask even $1 for it. So I just tossed it in the trash - I don't have it anymore to give specifics, but this book was probably out dated by the time it went for sale. Save your money for something that can help you improve your chess.
