This is a Keeper

An accurate and detailed review of all aspects of lumbosacral disorders from a biomechanical perspective. This book has challenged my practice. Please note, this topic is complex and I had to take a course in the Canadian approach to more fully appreciate this work. I have read the entire book once and several chapters 2-3 times and can still find new information. Well worth the money

Should have been a white paper

This is one of those business books that shouldn't have made into a book to begin with. There is simply not enough content to fill an entire book so the basic story gets repeated and repeated and... The authors could have said what needed to be said in a two page white paper and be done with it.

Additionally, the editor must have been asleep: typos, run-away sentences, and repetitive paragraphs (you read something and then the same paragraph shows up one page later).

Not worth the money. The authors should have done expert interviews before publishing a book to understand how to do it...

Meaningful strategic planning requires good and timely marketing research

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is well-written and didn't take too long to finish. I loved the little story about the entrepreneur who made a bundle cleaning hard drives. I recommend entrepreneurs/business strategists read this book. I suspect it will keep them on track in their pursuit of being successful.

The authors' message is that entrepreneurs should use market research to improve and refine their business strategy. They point out that it is crucial to business success to consider how large a product's market is and how fast that market is growing BEFORE spending time and money to actually develop the product. It's a waste of time and money to create a product for a small market that is not going to grow.

The authors are advocates of planning and avoiding trial and error. They believe in knowing what they are getting into, documenting a plan in writing, and then implementing the plan that logically will be successful. They go a step further than this, however. They also suggest that the market researcher enlist the help of experts who are interviewed during the marketing research.

The funny thing about this book is that most successful companies already do what the authors preach. The ones that don't were the Internet companies that went bust 5 or 6 years ago, and the millions of entrepreneurs that account for failed businesses year in and year out.

I would have liked this book better if it had been written by someone who did not have a background in Silicon Valley. Maybe someone from the automotive industry or financial services industry would have been great? But we are stuck with some computer guys. The book is still worth the read.

A passionate display, but a little colored

When this book first came out, I was a bit skeptical. It is not often that a man that you have never met decides to honor your own father, but chooses not to speak to you about him. I grew up with Charles DiFrancesca. He was my father, my best friend, and a true mentor. The stories in this book, however lavish they might seem, are true, but I cannot begin to express how much was left unsaid.

Good story but the writer could have done better

Charlie D was clearly a great guy. Reading of his struggle with cancer and how he dealt with it was the most inspiring part. Also the testimonial from his former girlfriend was enjoyable. Unfortunately, the writer was very jumpy and didn't consistently tell the story. The parts on trading were particularly boring and not helpful. I did enjoy the book based on the personality of Charlie D which comes thru along with the anecdotal stories. Be prepared to skim the slow parts.

Unusual, special book

I think the this book has been totally misunderstood by most people, because while it is about trading, it is not a trading book like Borcillino's book or "pit bull." It is a beautiful story about a man who overcame great odds...it just so happens to take place on the trading floor, which makes for great drama for finance and non-finance types alike

A cooler way to travel

I loved this book. After reading it I took a trip to Mexico and couch surfed with some wonderful people. I also gave the book away to a young woman with hopeful dreams of travelling the world. Perhaps she now knows a cooler way to travel that also happens to save you a couple dollars.

An Interesting Tale of Sleeping on Strangers Couches Around the World

I found this book hard to put down. It is hard to explain why, nothing out of the ordinary happens, there's no big disasters happening to the narrator as he travels or anything, the book isn't a humorous tale like Danny Wallace or Dave Gorman's books nor is there a really weird excuse for travelling like trying to win a bet or something. I guess the reason you can't put this down is the narrator (author) seems like a really nice guy, someone you wouldn't mind sleeping on your own couch, and the conversational style of writing is just, really, really good. This was the first of Thacker's books I read but I have since read his previous stuff which like this book, for some reason you just can't put them down.

This book is basically about a Melbourne guy who joins up with a few websites where members offer their couch (or a spare bed or something) for strangers from around the world to sleep for free (although some do have ulterior motives for making money from the couchee). I've backpacked Europe but never couched around the world and I found it quite fascinating. I don't know that it's a cheaper option if like the author you feel uncomfortable not doing something like buying them dinner in return for their hospitality which I probably would as well. Brian Thacker stays on a number of "couches" on an around the world airline ticket journey in North America, South America, Asia and Europe. You'll learn a bit about each country he visits as well as a tip or two if you ever go there yourself. As I said a great easy to read sit back for half a day relax and read book.
