It's an unfortunate reality that some parents will do their best to destroy a child's relationship with the other parent. So long as those misguided or sick parents have unsupervised time with the children, there's always a risk of confusion, conflict, or long-term damage to the bond with the "targeted" parent.

The most important aspect of this phenomenon is to catch it early, even if the bashing seems to occur on occasion or is subtle.

Eventually, enough little drops of poison can have a devastating consequence.

This book is an excellent tool to help "targeted" parents recognize signs of what the author calls poisoning (also called alienation tactics).

Though the book's readership would likely readily agree that taking the higher road is always best, what the author emphasizes is that if the higher road is not coupled with a proactive approach, devastation to the parent/child relationship can be the result.

What I found most helpful about this book are a couple areas:

A) I realized that no court order, and no amount of counseling, and no common sense discussion would stop my ex from her subtle, on-going attempts to undermine my relationship with my daughter.

B) I realized that there are many tactics I could employ to combat my ex's attempts... tactics that are nearly all positive and proactive.

The author provides many ideas to the reader on how to help ensure the poisoning parent's attempts fall on deaf ears in the child.

Strategies that I learned from this book have proven themselves with amazing results in how I handle my own situation... and the outcome is a young child who (on her own) has been able to conclude that her mother says untrue things about her father.

That's a best-case scenario when you face a parent who refuses to shield the children from conflict or disparaging remarks.

Though the attempts at alienation may never end, helping to insulate the effects is where this book shines.

hate campaign against a parent

I am a Social Worker who works with abused children. False abuse allegations are not a surprise in my field of work. Majority of the cases I work with, children do not indulge into trivial or "even ridicules" as Dr. Warshak defines it in his book, hate campaign against a parent. In fact the abused children I work with who are truly abused rarely reject the parent who abuses them. They want relationships with that parent, they want to see him or her and they truly love that parent. In cases of Parental Alienation - with or without false allegations- the reality is completely different. Dr. Warshak describes these cases in his book as the "the nuclear weapons" of custody litigation. Unfortunately, many mental health professionals who work with families fail to recognize the difference between true abuse and irrational alienation, and thus more training, education and research is needed in the field to provide helping professionals with more tools on how to recognize, differentiate and treat parental alienation.

I am also a parent who witnessed and experienced parental alienation or as Dr. Warshak defines it in this book "pathological alienation". The damage that is has done to my step-child is irreversible but there is hope. In this book Dr. Wrashak presents many ways on how to counteract Parental Alienation. He articulates "actions" such as self -restrain: self control against wanting to "lash-out" in the face of kids' rude and hateful behavior; maintaining contact: even when the kids complain and refuse Dr. Warshak doesn't recommend for parents to cease contact voluntarily - continue to exercise your rights and see your children regardless; developing a thick skin is another good action to consider to survive a campaign of hatred: Dr. Warshak articulates that one "must learn to withstand high levels of verbal aggression and provocative behaviors". This book is full of real life case examples that gives you chills when you read it because you can relate on so many levels.

I highly recommend the book to all helping professionals and parents who are living the nightmare of parental alienation. This is the best book out there on the parental alienation topic and will be an eye-opener for anyone who is going through divorce, or went though divorce or treating families of divorce.

good book! great information and very well written

Good book, great advice! it has many areas with really good advice, and going thru a divorce it gave me a lot of information that was very helpful. I would really recommend this to some one in a similar situation, it will really help a lot. We really enjoy trying and testing different products and reviewing them. Kuran (Islam and Mammon), a Duke University professor of economics and political science, continues his exploration of Islam and economics in a dense volume that debunks the most common apologies for the economic plight of the Middle East, such as colonization, or the economic importance of the annual hajj pilgrimage. Kuran argues instead that the failure of Middle Eastern economics is not due to Islam itself, but to the fact that Muslims failed to reinterpret previously successful economic concepts at the onset of the Middle Ages, while the West went on to create the corporation (see InProfile in this issue). Muslims may demur, but Kuran points out that many have abandoned some Qur'anic economic practices they disagree with, including the ban on interest, and, more progressively, they have updated and refreshed the tax code described in the Qur'an. Excellent Comparison of the Development of Islamic and European Economic Law

I have read many books on Islam. I read them to understand why Islam conquered so much so quickly, and why it failed both politically and economically over the last 500 years. The relative economic decline is of interest because around 1000 CE, the Muslim world was as wealthy as Europe. This is the first book that provided understanding that I could use. Not on conquest directly, but on the economics.

In "The Long Divergence", the author emphasizes two themes around Muslim law of inheritance. Islamic law mandated distribution of wealth after death amongst multiple heirs. This mandate had two results. First, it forced partnerships to be short lived: Death followed by demands for their part of the inheritance by heirs required liquidation of a partnership. Knowing that any death would end the partnership, Muslims tended to favor two person partnerships of short duration. In contrast, after 1000 CE Europeans developed forms of partnership and corporations that could survive the death of a single participant. Partly this was adoption of primogeniture, under which a single descendant could inherit the whole on one person's assets in a property, business or partnership. At the same time Europeans were becoming innovative about the types of business arrangements used to accumulate wealth. Something like modern corporations developed to manage guilds, monasteries, and even cities. European rulers, desperate for money, and often only weakly in power, were willing to allow independent groups take local power, in exchange for stability and the right to tax revenues or profits. These independent institutions were allowed to change their internal rules and general goals as circumstances changes.

The second theme in "The Long Divergence" explaining relative Islamic economic decline is Islam's failure to develop anything like the European corporation. Again this relates to Muslim inheritance law. The Waqf, the only way Muslims could create an enterprise that could outlive the founder had to be established for only one purpose and that purpose could never change. So, for example, a Waqf to establish a caravan station could never become anything else, even if trade routes or means of transportation changed. Meanwhile, as mentioned in the last paragraph above, European corporations could adapt to changing circumstances to redirect investment in the more productive ways as circumstances changed.

There is much more in this book. I think the author has discovered something about the role of law in economic development that explains a lot about the relative decline of the Islamic world relative to Europe.

There is one other benefit I got from reading "The Long Divergence". The author argues that the codification of rules of inheritance in Islam provided economic laws that were superior to alternatives available in much of the world at the time of the early Muslim conquests. Although he does not argue that this caused the rise of Islam, it suggests one reason for its early success.

Also noted in the book, is that the separation between Church and State in Europe helped lead to innovation in Europe and stagnation in the Islamic world. This made me remember independently that existence of canon law, which the Catholic Church created to govern its internal ecclesiastical affairs, independent of the laws of the political entities in which it served the religious needs of Europeans. Canon law still exists and is still used by the Church to settle issues pertaining to the Church alone. (These include discipline of clergy, alteration of church property, etc.) Many protestant religions have their own versions of cannon law.

Another thing: From this book I learned that Shia and Sunni Muslims have slightly different inheritance laws. I did not know that despite much reading on Islam.

The book made is entertaing, and made me think. Not too much more to ask for in a book on a potentially boring subject!

An excellent technical review of complex phenomena

When in law school, I studied Islamic legal theory. I wish this book had existed then. But even for a lay reader who is interested in social development and asks why the Islamic world seems not to have been able to develop a modern commercial society, this book will provide insight into why.

This is not an easy book. It presumes some knowledge of Islamic thought and of Islamic belief, as well as more generally of the history of the region from about 1400 to about 1900. Okay, fine, you weren't going to buy this if you're scared of the big words, but still be ready. I put it aside a few times and came back to it. But I always came back to it.

Kuran is an excellent writer and his prose is clear. His conclusions may not be indisputable, but they are well-drawn from his premises and they are highly plausible. They are also derived from data. He has gone through not just previous writers but also historical archives to get primary source data to back up his thoughts and analysis. This isn't Niall Ferguson - you don't have to wade through pages of tables and statistics - but it's clear that if Kuran had wanted to write that book he could have.

The other review of this book (at time of my posting there was only the one) has gone into great depth on the discussion of the rules of inheritance, and I won't repeat. I'll focus instead on one element that suggests to me that Kuran is onto something: his explanation for why Islamic societies continued to allow choice of law to religious minorities even after it was clear that they were benefiting from this, while denying it to Muslims who therefore couldn't have benefited. In an oversimplified nutshell, Kuran suggests that it's related to various societal factors all of which were intended to benefit Muslims and that this was an unintended side effect, and that foreign governments which were becoming more dominant in the world capitalized on their local co-religionists in order to extend their reach into the Muslim world. You may agree, you may not, but the argument is well-made.

But his most important argument is this: there is nothing innately anti-Islamic about modern capitalist structures, and the fact that Islamic countries haven't adopted them is a historical artefact and not an innate impossibility. As I was reading this, the revolution in Tunisia had just ended, Egypt was just ending, and Bahrain/Yemen/Algeria/Iran/Libya were ongoing. It will be interesting to see, if any of these countries decides to bring themselves into the modern commercial era, whether Kuran is right.

In the year 1000, the Middle East's economy was at least as advance as Europe's. But by 1800, the region had fallen dramatically behind. "The Long Divergence's" author, Timur Kuran, argues that the explanation lies not in geography or Muslim attitudes; instead it was Islamic legal institutions that slowed private capital accumulation, corporations, and large-scale production. Low trust, rampant corruption, and weak civil institutions have followed, and will take generations to overcome.

A good place to start is with the lack of corporate structure in early Islam. The first mostly Muslim-owned joint stock company came in 1851; further delaying Muslim corporations was the lack of a mechanism for trading shares, forcing shareholders to give up liquidity. 'Tax farmers' (those who paid rulers for the right to collect and keep taxes) might have evolved into corporations, but the rulers developed a bad habit of revoking the agreements.

The alternative to corporations, traditional Islamic partnerships, dissolved upon the death, withdrawal, incapacitation of any single member.

Estates, in turn, were divided according to Islamic inheritance rules. The intent was to spread wealth, strengthen families, benefit wives and daughters, and promote political stability. Muslim inheritance practices are embodied in the Koran, and had to modify.

Until modern times, Middle Eastern cities lacked corporate status. Kuran did point out that the early Muslim alternative to incorporated towns providing service was the 'waqf.' The waqf was perpetual, controlled by the founder per his directions, and could provide drinking water, pavement, travelers assistance (especially to those making a pilgrimage to Mecca), even colleges and madrases. Since the colleges were also constrained by the founders' directives, over time they evolved little and became intellectual backwaters. Regardless, these partially successful alternatives to incorporation reduced pressure to develop the corporate mode, and along with it the accounting and legal framework needed in support.

Non-Muslim subjects of Islamic states had to follow Islamic law only in matters of taxation and security - they were free to do business under the rules of their home jurisdiction. A frequent complaint was that Islamic courts were biased against Muslims (and vice-versa in Europe). Non-Muslims were prohibited from testifying against Muslims. Judges lacked training in commercial law, and the proceedings relied heavily on oral evidence (concerned over forgery, misreading of the contents Muslim illiterates, about 95% of the population). Litigants could hire witnesses.

Many mistakenly believe that Muslim law precluded charging interest. Kuran says this isn't true - it only prohibits 'riba,' the Arabian practice whereby a borrower's debt id doubled if not paid on time. This practice often resulted in the confiscation of the borrower's assets, even enslavement.

Overall, "The Long Divergence" is difficult reading, but worth the effort.

Safety is key...even on an exam

When I was ready to take my CSP test to get my certification as a safety professional, I knew that safety was key more than anything else, just as in any other situation. What I mean is that I didn't want to go into the test feeling anything but safe. I knew I wouldn't feel safe about the results unless I studied hard in advance. I didn't want to guess about how I would do... I wanted to know I would do well. I bought this study guide in hopes that it would help me review. It wasn't very expensive so I figured even if it only helped a little it would be worth it. Boy was it worth it! It was so comprehensive and well organized I could hardly believe it. It went through how to college, assess, and even manage safety risks. It also covered health, environmental and security type risks. It had everything I needed to know and I was grateful that it didn't waste my time on any little things that I really didn't need. I kept the guide in my office at home in case I ever need to remember any of the things it included. I know I had it all for the test, but that doesn't mean I'll remember every detail a year down the road, but at least I know I can find it again in the study guide if I need to.

Peter Collins puts it all into a delicious nutshell

Peter Collins is one of the more erudite architectural writers you will ever come across. This book was published in 1965, barely pre-dating the publication of Venturi's influential "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." Now that I've read both, if I had to recommend one, I would recommend Peter Collins. While Venturi attacks Modernism by simply saying "its not complicated enough, I like complex architecture (and therefore you should too)" Collins goes much, much more in-depth.

The various ideas architects have desperately flung around since 1750 are all traced, dissected, and put into their social contexts. Rationalism, Romanticism, Ecclecticism, Historicism/Archeology, Classics versus Goths, the Moderns, the various analogies to other fields architects have attempted - it is all discussed. The book stops at 1950, but this does not detract from its relevance in 2004, as we can see that architects have continued to explore connections with other genres in order to create their various forms. It is important to realize what we're doing and if it has ever be done before - and - it all pretty much has been. Not to despair though, Collins keeps it an interesting read, if you do not chuckle at his wit every now and then, then your sense of humor is dead. It is important to read this critically, and I found myself only very occasionally disagreeing.

One of my favorite chapters, which is almost a six-page long joke, is entitled "Architecture and Gastronomy." (and yet - it is not a joke!)

The only criticism of the book is perhaps his less-intensive use of illustrations than he might have. Those that he does include however are well-chosen.

A very closely related work to this is J. Mordaunt Crook's 1987 "The Dilemma of Style: Architectural Ideas from the Picturesque to the Post Modern." Crook makes a book that attempts to do essentially the same thing, but has a slightly diferent perspective. I mention it because I believe these two, Crook and Collins, should be read by any architect worth their salt.

Kenneth Frampton writes a fairly interesting introduction to the 1998 edition, hopefully this book will continue to have stamina for future generations of architects.

An excellent story

This is the only Brenda Joyce book thus far that has made me cry.

I thought Violet Cooper was an endearing heroine. She never had opportunities for education and such, but when they were offered to her she didn't turn them down. Her goal throughout was to better herself. Some of the situations were implausible, yes, but isn't that why they call it fiction?

I was somewhat surprised by the ending although it was hinted at several times throughout the story.

I have enjoyed all of Brenda Joyce's books thus far, my favorite being "The Third Heiress," but I especially like the time and place of books like "The Finer Things."

Sometimes I really hate reviewing books. I may not care for the book the 1st time I read it: Then years on I read it again and like it Or the other way around. First time I liked it: 2nd time I found the storyline slow.

Rags To Riches Romance

Brenda Joyce redoes the always fun Pygmalion tale in her newest novel THE FINER THINGS.

Violette Cooper is a child of the streets. Abandoned by her drug addicted Father, she struggles, stealing when necessary, in order to survive. She wants so much more out of life than what fate has handed her. When Sir Thomas, a kindly old Knight, offers her his hand in marriage she sees it as an opportunity to better herself and agrees to become his wife.

Sir Thomas introduces her to his friends', the Harding family, who immediately become enamored by the mix of beauty and innocence she presents and aren't offended by her heavy Cockney accent and her social faux pas. Violette finds herself drawn to the younger, handsome Harding son, Blake, but will not do anything to hurt her good-hearted husband/savior.

When Thomas dies and his hateful daughter begins to throw around accusations that Violette may have murdered him Blake feels compelled to help the innocent beauty. She falls in love with Blake and comes to the realization that he will never reciprocate her feelings unless she becomes a real Lady so she decides to take some lessons and succeeds in transforming herself. Unfortunately, no amount of lessons are going to soften Blake's hardened heart. Eight years earlier the love of his life shattered his dreams and he's made a vow that he will never open his heart again. Besides this little obstacle there are many other things conspiring to keep these two apart: murder charges, stubbornness, miscommunication, insecurity, another suitor, a tragic accident involving a family member and some more miscommunication.

Readers will admire the way Violette struggles to pull herself up out of the dregs of society and become a real Lady but may tire of some of the choices she makes and the lack of communication between this couple. The hero is sweetly protective of the heroine and a man devoted to his family but he has one heck of time admitting to his feelings when it comes to matters of the heart. The sexual tension and love scenes are tamer than the previous Joyce book I've read so readers looking for a sweeter story will not be disappointed with this gut-wrenching and tear-jerking read
