Grade 5 Up-- Myers organizes Malcolm X's life into four stages: his childhood; his adolescence; his period of working under Elijah Mohammad; and his life after breaking with the Nation of Islam. Throughout, his experiences and actions are presented in a broader social context, from the beliefs of Marcus Garvey, who exerted such an influence upon Malcolm's parents, to the culture of adolescent black males in the 1930s and 1940s, to the contrasts between the Nation of Islam's views and those of Martin Luther King, Jr, with all the shadings in between. The author discusses the evolution in Malcolm's character, as his belief in Islam gradually taught him that not all whites were the enemies of African-Americans. He strikes a good balance between his subject's personal life and broader social issues and movements. Myers does not judge whether or not Malcolm X's views were better than those of King, but rather shows how both appealed to specific audiences and contributed to the struggles of the 1960s. Surprisingly, though, there is very little discussion of current controversies that have emerged from the two points of view. Black-and-white photographs and a reproduction of a page from Malcolm's extensive FBI file help readers to visualize the key personages and events in America's past. Walter Dean Myers is the 2012 - 2013 National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. He is the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author an award-winning body of work which includes, SOMEWHERE IN THE DARKNESS, SLAM!, and MONSTER. Mr. Myers has received two Newbery Honor medals, five Coretta Scott King Author Awards, and three National Book Award Finalists citations. In addition, he is the winner of the first Michael L. From a 14 year old perspective

"I have a dream..." were the famous first words of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech at the Washington Street March. Many people have studied these words as the words of the most prominent black civil rights leader, but few have studied the words of the great Malcolm X. Malcolm X was a lesser known civil rights activist and leader. He was very controversial in his time, but few will argue that he is one of the smartest, most passionate men in history. This book takes you through Malcolm's childhood in Nebraska, his teenage years as a drug dealer on the streets of Harlem, and finally his adulthood, fighting for his rights as a great Islamic, black leader.

Walter Dean Myers does an excellent job of putting aside his feelings of Malcolm X and letting form your own opinion of him. Myers comes up with facts and not more so you can do this. He paints a clear portrait of Malcolm's entire life and work for young adult to adult readers. I personally enjoy the way that Myers is very straight forward in his writing but somehow adds a touch of suspense into the facts. "Malcolm was taking a dangerous course, and he knew it...if someone wanted to harm him, it could still happen. The word on the streets of Harlem was somber. Malcolm, it was said, was marked for death." p. 165. This is just one example of the suspenseful tone Myers uses to keep you turning pages. Myers writes about Malcolm as though he had known him personally and knows what times were like for him. At many points throughout the story, you feel as though you are there with Malcolm in Mecca or watching through the window as the assassination takes place. Myers keeps you into the story and wanting more and even wishing you had been able to meet the great Malcolm X first hand.

After reading this book, I think that Malcolm X's biography should be more commonly used name in places of learning. Malcolm X should be studied along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so that people don't only see one side of the civil rights movement. Though Malcolm is often misjudged or interpreted, he should be remembered as a great fighter who believed in equality and justice for all.

Malcolm X was one of the most devoted men who ever walked on earth. From street wise thug to a civil rights leader he had changed hatred into love. The book Malcolm X `by any means neccesary" written by Walter Dean Myers pushes you to your main objective in life. Malcolm X as known by many was a role model for all mankind.
Growing up wasn't a teenagers typical day for Malcolm.Day to day as he went outside to the world he would see hatred in the eyes of his brothers. As a child Malcolm experienced the life of violence, racism, and segregation. Everything that surrounded him was hate and struggle and that's way he became a street wise hustler.
As time traveled so would he. Getting wiser was part of growing up.Malcolm at age fourteen realize that he wanted to be someone successful in life. During his life Malcolm also realized that knowledge created hate and truth created violence. The author attempts and successfully shows how one person can change and impact a world just in a matter of time.
by the time of his tragic murder in 1965, Malcolm was world famous as the "angriest black man in America," why, because he strived to end racism and segregation amongst the human race. Malcolm unlike many other men brought new hope and self-respect.
Unlike other Authors, Walter dean Myers introduces a strong character who's life will impact you all throughout your life. This book opened up my mind to many questions, taught me not to always swallow what is dished( in terms of KNOWLEDGE). This is one book that you won't put down once you've started, this book also attempts to answer any questions about the struggle of life just by looking at the life and work of Malcolm X.

Walter Dean Myers Succeeds Again!

Evaluation: This is a wonderfully written biography of an influential African American, Malcolm X. Beginning with his birth in 1925 and ending with his assassination in 1965, Walter Dean Myers describes the trials and tribulations of one of America's radical African American leaders. The book details the many differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Though both men aimed to lift the African American people from their second class citizenship, Martin Luther King believed in a nonviolent approach. On the other hand, Malcolm X believed that the African American community needed to revolt. "Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way" (p. 107). These were Malcolm X's words as he described his belief that no African American solution could possibly involve fitting into a white society. Students will enjoy reading this biography. They will come to learn about a controversial figure in America. Several photographs and illustrations will help to entice even the most reluctant of readers.

I'm a professional graphic designer dealing mostly with print. I took this book out from the library because it seemed like a good resource. I'm very happy with it and fount it very useful - I ended up purchasing a copy.

This is a really good one.

I love this book. As a city planning professor and a practicing city planner, I've been waiting for this book. My planning students are expected to demonstrate a working knowledge in executing graphic design for presentations, posters, resumes, portfolios, maps, information graphics, books/plans, and many other products. Most of my students don't have confidence in their graphics skills because it is very hard to teach students how to be good designers. A quick page through Lewis' book, students "get it" and are eager to understand the art and science behind her intelligently crafted lessons. This book is now required reading for every student in the city planning program. I am certain that the quality of our students' graphic communications skills will rise as a result. Although this book's title suggests that it is for architects, city planners, landscape architects, and other similar fields of study will greatly benefit from the books lessons. Even MBA students with great business ideas could learn how to 'wow' their cohorts in presentations and with their final products. In fact, professionals in any field can learn how to become more convincing by using graphics in a smart way. This gorgeous work is already one of my favorite reference books and I predict it will become an important resource inside and outside of classroom. I'll bet that you will love it, too.

This book has proven to be a an extremely helpful tool in both my resume development, and designing my portfolio. The book lists guidelines and has multiple examples of what well crafted student, and professional resumes look like. It proved to be a key source in creating my portfolio as well. As an architecture student at the Ohio State University, it was easy to follow and help me produce a stunning student portfolio with its step by step template guidelines and recommendations for type faces, page layout, and graphic display.

A Good Overview

I think "Toward a Zero Energy Home" provides a good overview of what is going on in the technology side of building. I like the fact that a variety of opinions are presented for the reader on different methods working toward the same goal of building a technically smart, energy efficient living space. Anyone interested in this subject will find numerous other books that should be read as well for a more complete understanding of the topic. This volume, in my opinion, holds its own as one of the books that will contribute to that knowledge and is a worthwhile read.

A bit too generic for my taste...

While there is nothing inherently wrong with the book (I'm sure it will be exactly what some buyers want) it simply didn't meet my needs. I felt like I was reading a bunch of articles from my Fine Homebuilding magazine (BTW, great magazine).

That is, it covered all sorts of areas, but none of them in enough detail for my liking. In that sense, it is a complete "Guide" to energy self-sufficiency at home.

An excellent book to read before designing your own home.

In fact, before designing your own home, you should probably read 5 or 6 books at least, but I believe this should be the first one you read.
It has practical advise on how to save on utilities bills and making a very healthy home. Although it apply for an eco-view of things, it is not focused on the "tree huggers" crowd. Be ecological as a bonus for saving money.

Great advise in what to aim for and what to avoid.

An Extraordinary Story Of Unswerving Dedication To A Dream

Fans of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, new band Triptykon, or any strain of metal or hard rock will already be drawn to this book... and they should be: it's a "birth of a genre" story that will resonate with fans of any/all heavy, dark music. But it's also a lot more. Tom Gabriel Fischer's detailed story of his difficult, painful youth in Switzerland, his discovery and all-consuming love of metal music, and then the development and pursuit of his "I will become a metal musician; I will make this music my life; I WILL persevere" vision is truly moving.

The pictures of band members, associates, and ephemera make the book that much more special as they parallel the written document (and the blunt, honest, often sharply self-critical nature of the comments by ALL who contribute adds much to the reader's experience of the story).

This is a book for fans to race through, and it's also a book to be savored in subsequent readings, perusals of the photos, and so forth. It's what I'd call a large-format hardcover and a truly impressive piece of work--a big, weighty tome, both physically and in its words and pictures.

Hellhammer was crucified by most music journalists in its day. It was also a band that lit fires in the minds and ears of underground metal fans around the world. Now, as Mr. Fischer and his new bandmates in Triptykon are about to release their first album, the time is perfect for this retrospective look at a group that was radical, that was loved and hated, and that spawned many imitators.

Final note: this book should come packaged with Demon Entrails, the 2007 official CD release of Hellhammer's original recordings. Listening to the music as one reads is a great immersive experience.

Black Metal Pioneer Gets His Due!

Anyone who claims to be a fan of extreme metal should know who Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka:Satanic Slaughter; Tom G.Warrior) is: this man is the driving force behind the genre, hands down: the singer from Darkthrone writes the Foreword with great veneration for the artist. This book was a real trip down memory lane...I first listened to Celtic Frost in 1986 and was hooked for life. Throughout the 1980s, Celtic Frost was the heaviest band around, until Morbid Angel and Death arrived on the scene. Hellhammer was the first incarnation of Mr. Fischer's unending quest to push the limits of what extreme metal was meant to be, and it laid the groundwork for what Celtic Frost was to become.

What is interesting about Mr. Fischer's prose is that it truly is full of conviction: you have no doubt that the man was determined to create a band that satisfied his vision, regardless of the sacrifices made. Fiercely intellectual, Mr. Fischer challenges all around him to accept who they are, and to pursue their dreams; never compromising or bitter, this man is truly a leader and visionary artist, along with co-writer Martin Eric Ain.

If you want to go back to the roots of Black Metal, please do yourself a favor and get this book: the quality and invaluable photos and information alone makes it a treasure. When you have done that, get on Amazon and buy all the CF CDs and the Hellhammer one as well. Finally, this poineer is being able to tell his whole story!

This book covers the early years of Tom G Warrior and company's musical entry and rise in the scene of the early 80s. Loaded with tons of rare and killer photos...various line ups and total monologe-style writing by TG Warrior and others make you feel like you are sitting in a room with them, listening to metal and hearing their history unfold in various stories and events. Told with a true sincerity for what actually happened and covering the up-hill battle they faced on a daily basis for Hellhammer to become a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene.

Taken to the Extreme

In Submission, the first book of Master Alex Ironrod's "Leather Master and Slaves" trilogy, Tarquin Charlton and Paul Everest evolve their relationship while trying to discover their real selves. Then, in Domination, Tarquin and Paul struggle to define the role each will play in their combined lives and growing leather family. And now, in the third chapter, they must now work on the tricky balance when a new submissive arrives with an agenda of his own. Which leads to their "Obsession."

As in his previous two novels, Alex Ironrod explores and brings depth of character to his protagonists, a rare thing in kinky books. Tarquin and Paul must seek the trail in what becomes an increasingly dangerous game as Rufus, a British actor set to star in a US television series, begins to work his overt and covert manipulations on the relationship. Along with the help (or meddling) of The Circle of Six, Paul and Tarquin have their boots full.

What Master Alex continues to do is make his characters smart and kinky, with dungeon filled with tools but a life outside the kink. All three of his books are terrific examples of just how good leatherotica can be, and his short story collections ([...] and The Ironrod Chronicles II) are also excellent reads.
