About the Author
David Sedlak is the Malozemoff Professor in the Department of of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, co-director of the Berkeley Water Center, and deputy director of the National Science Foundation’s engineering research center for Reinventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt). He is the 2014 recipient of the National Water Research Institute Clarke Prize.

The Best Book on the Crisis of Drinking Water

With drought in the news all over the country, this is a very important book and quite readable. The book looks at the history of drinking water beginning with ancient Rome, its chemistry, the story of how it is treated and delivered to our homes, and the challenges and changes that will be required to accommodate a growing world population.

The book is written in a lively and accessible style with lots of humor, fascinating anecdotes and personalities, and filled with counterintuitive observations, such as the fact that most of our drinking water in the future will come from sewage. (Some of it already is, but don't tell the residents of Houston that).

There are a number of books published about water. But most of them deal with the subject from a geo-political or world environmental perspective. This book is different. It's written by a hydrological engineer and explains the practical steps we need to take to avoid dying of thirst.

Timely overview of the importance of water

If you are looking for a dry, academic treatise on why humans have corrupted the earth, keep looking.

"Water 4.0" is a delightful, fascinating and ultimately very balanced treatment of humans and water: past, present, and future.

David Sedlak has won many awards and recognition for his innovative and high quality teaching at Berkeley, and it shows through in the book. You will probably put the book down and be amazed at how much you have learned about water and what an easy read it was. The author has produced a very readable tour of water and its importance to human civilization. Starting with the early efforts to channel fresh water to the present and an open view the future, the importance of water is delivered in a fascinating tour of Roman aqueducts, French sewers, Victorian battles for health, through modern systems for delivering water and removing wastes.

Ultimately, the reader is given a great primer on water and its importance to life and society, and in the end, positioned to consider how human society will continue to grow given the challenges of obtaining and providing clean water while removing wastes in sustainable ways. I think that the author has succeed in his goal of calling our attention to the importance of water to all of us, and how big those challenges are for both low resource and high resource societies.

Insightful and comprehensive look at the way our society treats (and mistreats) water.

David Sedlak's treatise on the history and future prospects for water resources in our society is an eye-opening look at the remarkable engineering that has helped to make our civilization what it is today. His organization of water infrastructure development into four major "revolutions" seems appropriate and logical, and this treatment helps to explain the sometimes curious ways in which we currently access and dispose of the water we use. The book is an excellent read for both the expert and novice reader, and Professor Sedlak's deep understanding of the subject matter is readily apparent. The writing style is fun and easy to follow, and I found myself having many "aha!" moments as I read about development of treatment technologies and water delivery methods.

Most importantly, Sedlak takes great care to highlight the significant and critical challenges that we face at this particular moment with respect to both water quality and water quantity. It is abundantly clear that our society must reevaluate the way in which we use and dispose of water if we are to avoid serious environmental, social, and economic hardships. Water 4.0 should prove a rallying point for those interested in this important topic, and therefore I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the health and well-being of both our society and the global environment.

Out of date, light on detail, 50% on tools and setting up one's shop

Very disappointed with the book. About half the book addresses basic, dated material on tools and their uses. To summarize the first part of the book, to work on small engines you may need to have a sparkplug socket, various sizes of open and box end wrenches, pliers, nut drivers, screw drivers, blade balancing tool, etc. Remember to disconnect the sparkplug before working on the engine and remember gasoline is flammable. The latter half of the book provides basic, incredibly basic small engine troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of what appears to be collector item vintage engines. Engines need air, gasoline, oil, and an ignition source. If you are mechanically skilled enough to consider working on your own mowers, chippers, snow blowers and such, you are not likely to find any real value between the covers of this book.

The instructions in this manual are great for the beginner small engine tech. However, the latest engines are not included, which is too bad. It's time for an update on the material.

No surprises, just a useful book from Haynes. I have used their manuals for years as they have pretty comprehensive coverage of whatever you would need to know to keep, in this case, a lawnmower engine running.

D.M. Fife did it again! He provided us with a very spectacular, exciting and overwhelming story. In this sequel to "Light and Dark: the awakening of the Mageknight" we get to know Danny, Sabrina, Chris, Doug and all the others a little better. Every single one of them gets a bigger part in the saving of the Light. They also get to know and appreciate each other better. They get to taste feelings of victory and loss together and discover that their bond is more than mere friendship.

D.M. Fife has a unique writing style. He makes it possible to "see" everything you read in a very vivid way. For me, reading this book was like watching a movie with super special effects. The story made me even think a little more of Harry Potter than the first one, but not in a way it bothered me. The author has created a complete magical world with special items like the "Bondeds" that add a great value to it. Also the references to King Arthur, Merlin and others are woven very good into this story.

I'm really looking forward to the third book in the series and recommend this one to everybody who's a fan of Harry Potter, magic, good against evil, epic fights... I believe lots of readers will enjoy this book!

This book has improved immensely since the rough and awkward start of the first book. That first awkward chapter of the first book is worth slogging through to get to here. The writer improves with each chapter of this series he writes. The last part of this book (no spoilers) has a powerful haunting scene. The story doesn't flinch away from it at all which I very much appreciate. Some things I had been skeptical about pays off because the characters start to question it as well. Some of the secondary characters get a lot more depth here as well. One of the kids sole character trait still seems to be "Elf Aficionado" though... I will be the next book the day it comes out.

Loved how the characters developed from the first one to the end of this book. The Bonded are such an awesome creation and really add to the story. The story had its sad parts and its joyous parts.

Very interesting and rare aproach. You won't find many books talking about the sacrifices of the old testament in such detail, although this is one of the most important matteres of the old covenant.
The author gives you a very good perspective to see the fullfiling of the sacrifices in the New Testament.

Ideas, not instructions

As a child of the 80's, I remember fondly the old LEGO Idea books. In those books, there were lots of photos of LEGO creations, and instructions that showed how to build some of the models in the book. I remember the Lego Idea Book 6000 the best, that's the one that follows Bill and Mary as they build a house, explore a city, travel to space, and then back in time to a medieval castle. When I saw the title of this book, the obvious connection was to those old books, so how does it compare?

The one thing that's missing is the instructions - this is not an instruction manual. Also, unlike Sean Kenney's smaller books (Cool City, Cool Cars and Trucks, and Cool Robots), this is a big book - nearly 200 pages! Like Sean's books, this book is filled with photos of LEGO creations. Like Sean's books, the intent of the book is to give you ideas on how to build things. You'll find that a lot of ideas can be crammed into 200 pages.

The book is broken up into sections, essentially these are: vehicles, buildings, spaceships & robots, castles, pirates & adventure, and real world creations. This last section is very interesting, showing you things such as picture frames and pencil holders made out of LEGO. As you can see, like the old LEGO Idea book, this book hits on many of LEGO's core themes.

Each of the sections starts out with a two page spread of useful parts that can be used to build creations in that section. I found that even these pages gave me ideas and started me thinking on how a particular part could be used. After that you'll find a number of creations beautifully photographed, often with multiple views which come in handy if you are attempting to reverse engineer one of the creations so that you can build it yourself. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at a LEGO truck and wished I could see how the frame was built. The multiple angle photos in this book help so that you won't experience that problem. At the end of each section, you'll find a few pages where you "Meet the Builder." These include some interview style questions where you learn about the builder who wrote a particular section of the book. I was surprised to find that one of the builders is only 18!

I think LEGO fans of all ages will enjoy the book, but young children might have a hard time handling the book due to its size. The lack of instructions also mean that it is probably more suited to an experienced LEGO builder - either an older child or a parent who enjoys building with younger children. My six year old son enjoys paging through the book, but it's a bit much for my 3 year old to handle. Neither would be able to build anything in this book without my help.

Overall, I think this is another great book option to inspire LEGO builders - but remember this book is about ideas and imagination - and you can't write instructions for that. If you know what you are buying, I think you'll really like this book, but don't expect it to be what it is not. If you want instructions, try one of the Brickmaster books such as LEGO City Brickmaster.

The description of this book is somewhat deceiving. The pages show a lot of Lego specialty pieces (from particular Lego models) that are slightly reconfigured. One would need to have purchased nearly every specialty model to build the forms shown in the book. Also, if one does happen to have the pieces needed, there are no "instructions" or steps shown to build the model shown.

The book is cleverly annotated with captions and well-photographed. Many children will enjoy looking at the photos and reading or having the captions read to them.

If, however, one is looking for ideas for a child to use the hundred or thousand of Legos sitting in a box, this book will not help.

Perfect for "free builders", not for those who can't substitute.

I love this, but one of my kids not so much. So this book is meant to give you ideas of smaller projects, but doesn't lay out all the instructions for you. In fact, several of them you can't even see what bricks they used for certain parts. My 5 year old is very creative and likes to "free build". He loves this. He's all about substituting whatever bricks we have to make the project. My 9 year old is not a fan. He likes to build off the instructions the complete sets. He doesn't like to "free build" as much, and he takes the book too literally. If he sees it has a piece we don't have he doesn't want to make it.
