The Gunfighter and The Gear-Head (The Raven Ladies Book 1), by Cassandra Duffy

An apocalyptic alien invasion set humanity on the edge of extermination. Unable to match technology with the invaders, humanity bet their existence on their physical strength. In a desperate last stand by the world’s greatest scientists, the cataclysm electromagnetic pulse wiped out technology on the planet, stranding the aliens on earth, locking them in the cage with the beasts of humanity that remained. Using pre-industrial weapons of war, the surviving humans fought back…

Six years later, Gieo, the self-proclaimed last pilot on earth, was shot down yet again. She finds herself in the unwelcoming post apocalyptic Old West town of Tombstone as the guest of a beautiful gunfighter; the alien huntress and gunslinger Fiona has a turbulent history to match her violent existence that both intrigues and frightens Gieo. Their budding romance hits an immediate snag when Fiona’s mysterious past finally catches up with her, bringing with it old flames, hot grudges, and a rekindling of the war with the aliens that had cooled to a stalemate.

Sky-captain Gieo and her fleet of steam-powered dirigibles are humanity’s best chance to turn the tide of war against the alien invaders, but only if Fiona can protect her from blind cultists, jealous ex-girlfriends, and a town of apocalypse cowboys with suspect sanity.

About the Author
Cassandra Duffy spent most of her childhood being precocious, which stopped being entertaining or impressive when she grew into an adult, at which point she had to start being precious. After being an outcast child prodigy it was no surprise when she graduated from one of the many fine University of California schools a year early to follow her girlfriend in a cross country move. She writes a free-lance sex advice column found in various lesbian magazines and dating websites. Her short story collections and novels can be found on her website, Amazon.com, or Barnes & Noble. Two of her greatest prides are being a true California girl and author of some truly naughty things. She is a dutiful partially-Asian daughter who is beloved by her fairly traditional Korean father who thinks having a gay daughter is just fine as long as she keeps playing coed flag football. She is a stereotypical younger sister, and an adoring aunt of a hilarious little boy. Being a modern techno-freak, gamer-girl, she spent most of her childhood dreaming of being a video game designer, but changed her mind and brought her dreams of world building and story-weaving to writing unique romance novels. Cassandra is a gleefully monogamous girlfriend to an earthbound goddess who was once her high school bully, but has done a magnificent job of making up for all the school girl nastiness ever since. When she isn’t being an avid fang girl (vampire fan girl) or tormenting people in online gaming, she lives and writes in Winter Park, Florida with her partner and soul mate Nichole and their two cats: Dragon and Josephine.

The most fun I've had between the pages of a book all year
By Sally Bend
Kind of a steampunk, post-apocalyptic, western, alien invasion mash-up, The Gunfighter and The Gear-Head is the most fun I've had between the pages of a book all year. It's sexy, it's funny, it's action-packed, and did I mention, it's sexy? While you'll find the usual steampunk technology here (like steam-powered dirigibles and methanol powered automobiles), it's the more bizarre contraptions that excited me. For example, who wouldn't want a Sapphic Intimate Encounter Reciprocity Concluder that "let's a lesbian couple know when they're done having sex." Because, as we all know, "without it, girl-girl sex could hypothetically go on indefinitely."

Technology aside, it's the interplay between Gieo and Fiona really drives the story. Theirs is one of the weirdest, most wonderful romances in speculative fiction, as much a battle of the intellect as it is a celebration of the physical. There's a scene where an exasperated Fiona asks if there's anything she can do that Gielo won't enjoy, to which Gielo responds "I'm not sure. Why don't you start doing things to me, and I'll let you know when I don't like one of them?" that really sums them up nicely.

There are also some very absurd, Monty Python-esque developments to the story that should make you groan with feigned outrage, but which you can't help but clap delightedly at. The methanol addicted cultists are a prime example - having noticed the alien invader's aversion to blindness, they volunatrily drink themselves blind to protect themselves. That might be fine, if all they did was hole up in a cave and hide, but these crazy cultists want to fight . . . even though they can't see two feet in front of their faces.

Extremely well-written, with a story that's told a break-neck pace, but which never becomes tiresome, this is a book I would gladly read again and again. I know I'm not doing it justice here, but it's so hard to explain, without spoiling the story. Suffice to say, if you're up for an imaginative, slightly-absurd, reluctantly romantic buddy-cop style comedy, set is a post-apocayptic future decimated half by aliens, and half by human insanity, then I can't recommend this highly enough. Read it and enjoy!

In Love
By SquidZilla
So in love with the characters and the type of writing style is easy to comprehend but also the world that was created was an interesting idea and I really did love it. I hope this writer keeps it up because I would pick up another one of her books especially within the LGBT community sometimes you get some real crap or just a lot of short stories, so this was a great relief to find such an interesting novel.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
By Nicole
I struggled with whether I could fairly recommend this book to other readers. It has flaws... serious flaws. But in the end, I enjoyed the story. I also paid close to $18 to get this in paperback (including shipping) and I don't feel ripped off. So that has to say something, right?

A quick synopsis before I get down to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly....

Aliens have come to Earth. The Slark are four-armed lizards and they do NOT come in peace. They want to colonize Planet Earth, and they see us as tasty snacks. But they underestimated how viciously mean humans can be. To make all things equal, Earth's scientists set off an electro-magnectic pulse to wipe out the Slark's advanced spaceships and weaponry. This had an unforeseen side effect of blowing out every computer on Earth, and anyone who had a cell phone in their pocket got it too.

So Earth is blasted back into the industrial age, all the smart people are dead, and a bunch of pissed-off lizards are stuck here with no way to go home.

The story has two main protagonists - Fiona and Gieo. Fiona is an ex-underwear model turned gunfighter (yeah, I just typed that). She's completely narcissistic, which means she doesn't care about anyone but herself, so she never hesitates to clear leather. Since she never hesitates, she's fast. And anyone who confronts her is dead.

Gieo is one of the smart people. She survived the EMP disaster because she was grounded by her parents or something... I forgot that part. But she survived, and now she's busy building robots and aircraft to fight the Slark. She's also cute, and Fiona has a weakness for cute. The story starts when Gieo's homemade aircraft gets shot down in the desert and Fiona is sent out to find her.

*The Good*

This story is original and fun. Aliens and cowgirls... yes, it's been done before (with cowboys). But it's still a rare combination in science-fiction and it was a freaking fun concept. That's the best thing I can say about this book - it's fun. It's also sexy. The sex scenes are hot and explicit and... explicit. Let's just say that there are no "fade to black" moments. These girls do it all with the lights on.

I also liked how BADASS the characters are. There is no moralizing. Humans are violent. That's a fact. If you don't deal with it someone will come along and kill you (there is actually quite a bit of philosophical musing on the violent nature of humanity. It's just interspersed between Fiona shooting people).

If the book just stuck with Fiona and Gieo having sex and fighting Slark and getting into gunfights with other disgruntled humans, I'd be a happy reader. But no, there's more.

*The Bad*

I didn't like the Raven Ladies. It almost seemed like there were two books here. Weaving the story of the Raven Ladies into the story of Fiona and Gieo was too much. There were too many characters. I can totally see how the Raven Ladies would be cool - but I didn't want to read about them. I wanted to stay with the main plot.

The pacing dragged whenever the story moved from Gieo to the Raven Ladies. The plot would have been better if it had been more concise.

*The Ugly*

Flashbacks. God I hate flashbacks. Authors should be limited to one per book, and it should only be a page long. There is one flashback in this book that lasts almost a chapter. I would have skipped it, except it contained a CRAZY sex episode between Fiona and the leader of the Ravens. But while the sex was interesting, the flashback didn't really add anything to the story.

So here's the deal - I read this book and enjoyed it, and I believe I got my money's worth. But other readers might not be able to look beyond the dragging plot and flashbacks. You are warned.

PS: My copy has the old cover. The old cover is better.
